Stylish Surprise Has Arrived: Dress Review

An update from my post about my first time purchasing one of ModCloth's Stylish Surprise dresses.  Today is the big day to see if my gamble has paid off.  My mystery dress has arrived and if you're wondering if I'll ever purchase another "Stylish Surprise" dress the short answer is a resounding No

Dress Review:  This review will be short and sweet because I don't need a Pros category and I'm not even going to bother putting a nice background on these pics.  I am unhappy across the board, and I feel that at $20 ModCloth still made their money back on this dress.  For the quality, this piece shouldn't have cost more than $12.  The fabric is thin, cheap, and there is no lining.  The fit isn't great and the print is hideous.  There are two pockets in the front which are tightly sewn shut causing me to wonder if the company just gave up half way through making these.
Since I love a challenge, and mostly since this dress is non-refundable (well played, ModCloth) I'm going to see if I can take this lemon and make lemonade.  The long answer as to whether or not I'll ever buy another Stylish Surprise is this: I took a gamble, which is fun now and then, and I lost, which is never fun.  But, I've learned from this experience and from now on, I'll stick to buying dresses I've seen and pre-approved.

  1. I'm so sorry this happened to you. I so appreciate your honesty and "taking one for the team" by trying this out and sharing your experience. I've admired your pictures on Modcloth for some time and finally started following you here. I love your simple, lady-like style and I look forward to your new posts. Thank you, also, for introducing me to buying second hand!

  2. Thanks, Lori, that's a great way to think of this experience. I hope I have helped someone out there who's been considering trying the stylish surprise. If anyone out there has experience (good or bad) with these mystery dresses, I'd love to hear about it.

  3. In honest truth I was rather looking forward to seeing the result of the stylish surprise, but from what I can see it definitely was a case of daylight robbery, I'm sorry to hear of you're disappointment, for what it's worth I have to say you did a grand job of accessorizing it.

  5. lol I actually like the print, but I always love big bold prints. It does look pretty on you, IMO, but I can't feel the fabric so I'll have to take your word on it that's it's cheap and flimsy. I also HATE when I buy a dress like that with no lining. You can always try to swap it or sell it on the facebook Modcloth BST page or ebay. I still haven't received mine yet!
