Bombshell Bikini

Summer's nearly here and boy is it ever!  We're in the 90s already and it's only May.  I guess I've wished a little to hard for warm weather and now it's coming with a vengeance.  It's already time to start thinking about bathing suits and I've been wearing the same swimsuit since 2010.  Back then there was this style at Victoria's Secret that I absolutely adored and when it finally went on sale I bought it and have been wearing it ever since.
It's been with me in the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Caribbean and it still looks good.  But at some point it will give up the ghost and I'd like to be prepared.  I should mention that I have another polka dot bikini that I have no strong feelings about whatsoever and it's the one I take with me to creeks and rivers and places where there's dirt instead of sand.  Understandably, it's beyond saving after only four years of wear.
So, I need one to replace my glam bikini that made me feel like a Bond Girl and one that's comfy and resilient for casual family trips.  When I spotted this scalloped gingham number from SheIn it looked so much like a classic bombshell bathing suit that for $14 I had to try it.  sizing can be tricky when putting an American body into an Asian brand.
Normally I would go with an XS in US, S in Asian, but when I looked at the measurements, I knew that my bum was not going to fit into the size Small.  I went with the medium on this bathing suit and I'm glad I did.  The bottoms fit nicely, but the top is a bit loose around the bottom band.  Now, y'all know I'm not terribly well endowed, so I expect this sort of thing for my pear shape.  Since the straps are adjustable but not the band, I'm simply going to fold over the back and sew it together to make the band the smidge tighter that I'd like it to be for my ideal fit.  I'd still like to get one more swimsuit this season, but this little beauty may be my go to for some time to come.

Blue Ribbon Baker

Remember this Blue Ribbon Baker dress?  Me too.  Geode certainly knows how to make a lovely gown and ModCloth remains the world champion market place for them.  Since I missed out back in the day when it was new, I jumped at the chance to get it on Poshmark.  It seems like every single outfit photo I saw of this dress had someone using it as a Halloween costume for Alice in Wonderland.  Not me.  Ok, maybe me at some point, but for now, I'm going to wear it as it is in all its vintage style loveliness.

Form of Flattery

It's always something, right?  Today it's cats.  They're here to remind me that even though I'm all dolled up in my favorite theme--nautical, of course-- that I'm far away from any body of water.  They're also here to remind me that they are in dire need of belly rubs and chin scratchings.  That's what I get for trying to take a few photos in my yard this morning instead of  driving to some crazy location or other.  We're glad to have our orange cat, Garfield with us actually.  He's always been very low-key.  As long as he is fed, he's happy.
The other day my youngest noticed that he wasn't feeling well and even growled at her when she tried to pick him up.  She told me about it and I went to inspect.  He seemed alert, but in pain and I noticed that his leg was extremely swollen.  He'd been bitten by a snake, probably a copperhead, because a rattlesnake bit would likely have killed him.  We gave him water and the next morning he was able to eat and get up a little.  Now he's padding around just fine and decided to join me for a photo or two.  Of course, our flabby tabby stopped by too while the kittens are MIA, probably tormenting some cute furry creature.

No Place Like Gnome

I never thought I would fall for gnomes.  But I have, there's nothing I can do about it.  Collectif knows how to make a beautiful cut, but I would recommend sizing carefully.  I usually wear a 0-2 in Us sizes which has always translated to a 2-4 in UK sizes, but the size 4 in this dress was waaaaaay too tight.  I had to send it back for a size 6.  It's still too tight and the tag reads XXS as well.  I don't know if I'll send this one back as I can breathe a little bit and it's a long wait to exchange.  Typically it's about two to three weeks for an exchange to be complete and in that time the dress could sell out.  So, if you decide to purchase, think of the 4 as XXS, 6 as XXS, 8 as XS and so on.  Other than that, this dress is totally gnome-tastic!

Sometimes I have to browse for a while before I find a style that catches my eye.  Not so with this dress.  I was drawn to this Audrey dress in Seaside right away.  Once again, KarinaDresses has made a lovely, slinky dress that has the shape and the comfort I so appreciate about their dresses.

Me First!

Ok, so I'm a longtime shopper at ThredUp and if you've ever shopped there, you know that you can put something in your cart for 24 hours and then it get put back out for others to buy.  So, (and we've all been there) say there's something you want, and of course they only have one of just about everything and things sell like lightning there, but you don't have the money for it or aren't quite certain you want to buy it, what do you do?  Naturally you take it out of your cart and put it back in once every 24 hours.  I can keep that up for a day or two, maybe even a week, but after that, I have a life and I just can't be there to constantly keep putting things in my cart.  I've tried, but it never works.  I either have to buy it or let it go.
Now at ThredUp there's a new system called First Dibs.  If someone has something sitting in their cart, you can push a little button that puts you first in line for it.  But this means you're automatically committing to buying the item if the other person doesn't in their 24 hour time slot.  There has been one dress in particular that I've been watching in someone else's cart for two months.  Two Months!  And the person still hadn't bought it.  So, I used the dibs button and eight hours later the dress was finally mine.  (If you happen to be that person, I gotta say, I love you, and I'm a little sorry, but not really that sorry.  You had your chance.)  Yes, this new system very unfortunately take the delay out for some, but it does seem more fair this way.  And hey, I finally got the dress!

A Reason to Smile

I could have had a very bad day---but I didn't.  I got up feeling pretty down, but determined to stick to a routine.  Sticking to a morning routine helps to keep me from spiraling.  So, in spite of how I was beginning to feel, I got up, got dressed and decided to head over to this wild apple tree to take some outfit photos of the very last of my handmade dresses.  It was supposed to be overcast which creates the perfect lighting for photos.  By the time I had everything loaded in my car, the clouds were disappearing creating a very harsh morning sun.  Hmmmm......staring to seem like a bad day, but I was determined to try the photos anyway.
On the way I was with my spouse, chatting as usual when suddenly there was a sound like an explosion and the car went screeching uncontrollably down the road for 200 feet before coming to a halt sideways in the lane.   It was 8:30 a.m. on a Monday morning, who would be home?  I lost my cell phone a month ago and knew the second that I replaced it it would turn up, so I've been waiting.  No cell phone on a lonely road at a time of morning when no one would be home with a car that wasn't going anywhere without a tow truck.....you see how this was seeming a lot worse, kind of like a really, really bad day....
We stepped out of the car to find the front driver's wheel broken off the axle due to a worn out ball joint.  The wheel was lying on the road and the broken brake line was spewing fluid.  I walked to a nearby house and knocked.  No one answered.  So, we started walking down the road to try another house.  We were worried because the car was in the road with only the hazard lights flashing to warn on coming cars.  We heard a car approaching and looked back to make sure it would see our car and be able to avoid it.  The car slowed down and drove around ours then slowed next to us and the woman inside offered us a ride to the local gas station.  As we chatted it turns out we have mutual childhood friends and life experiences with travel, etc.   She dropped us off at the gas station and even though it was against their store policy, (after all, who doesn't have a cell phone these days?) they let us use their phone to call for a ride and a tow truck.  Our ride came, took us back to the car to wait and eventually a tow truck was on the way.  While we were waiting on the tow truck I managed to get a few outfit pics, and was I ever glad that I remembered to take along my sensible walking shoes.
After the tow truck driver got our car loaded and delivered to the mechanic, we set off again to get another car.  We've only had this awful car for about 18 months, but we've had to make repairs of some kind or another every month to two months as long as we've owned it and once a car tries to kill me, I have a personal rule about just getting rid of it.  That little lemon had it's chance and I was done.  We stopped at a greasy spoon along the way and promptly spilled our drinks....they day wasn't getting much better....and then pressed on to find a car.
We searched several lots for a decent pre-owned in our price range and I was ready to give up.  Suddenly a sweet little station wagon pulled into the lot fresh from the detailer and I knew that was my car.  A few months ago we paid off our house and land and have been debt free and wanting to stay that way.  Really, really, wanting to stay that way.  I felt a little sick, or maybe a little blue signing on for car payments for the next five years, but there was no way around it.  Driving home in my "new" car, I had a lot of time to think.  This could have been a really bad day, but it wasn't.  It wasn't a bad day, because all I needed was a tow truck instead of an ambulance.  While I may be saddled with car payments now, I'll take that any day over hospital bills or funeral costs.
You see, just three days earlier, we--my spouse, two children, my mother, and I--were all in this little car driving to a zoo for a family day about 200 miles away.  We were on the interstate bumper to bumper with cars going 80-90 miles per hour.  If our car had malfunctioned then, I have no doubt it would truly have been a bad day.  I know people would have been severely hurt and getting help/ getting home  would have been a far more difficult ordeal.  Instead, my mom and kids were all safely at home and we were on an empty, quiet stretch of road, in fact we were on the only straight stretch of the entire commute.  The rest is all sharp curves and that would have been serious of the car had malfunctioned on a curve.  Ok, maybe today didn't go how I wanted it to, but that doesn't mean it was a bad day.
I have no doubt that God was watching over us all and I am thankful instead of angry or sad about how this day went.  At the end of it all, I drove home to two very excited girls who will finally have room to stretch their growing legs in this car, and a box full of kittens with their sweet baby blues and soft purrs.  Our little black cat, Midnight, on the day before our zoo trip, finally decided to introduce us to her first brood of kittens.  We were thinking she'd have one or two on her first go round.  Instead she brought us four little puff balls to babysit for her while she went in search of a hearty meal or two.  They were shy at first, but now we're all good friends and Midnight has enjoyed having the extra help.

True Blue Hamilton

Unique-Vintage has some really lovely things in their new spring collection, but I think I was most excited to see this latest version of the Hamilton dress.  This, by my count, is the fifth version of this dress to hit the rack, and I think it may just be my favorite.  One look at this beauty and it was Hello, Summer and I just had to have it.  I own the green and pink versions, but passed on trying out the black and yellow/purple versions.  But this pale blue was just my style.
The fabric is thicker than previous versions and since the dress is unlined, I like it much better with this heavier fabric.   I think my previous two purchases of this dress were sold out in my size so I had to go one size up.  This one I ordered in my usual XS and I love the fit.If I had one recommendation for this dress it would be to sew those buttons on tight.  They're a little heavy on the fabric and the dress doesn't come with replacements.  Other than that, I foresee lots more pics of this dress on the way.
