An Unexpected Stop

It's wonderful when things just work out.  It's also rather unexpected--at least in my life.  I usually make a plan B for every situation and sometimes a plan C when things look too impossible.  Even with all that preparation there are still things that come up which knock me for a loop and that, quite simply, is called living.
SHEIN Tie Neck Ruffle Armhole Swing Dress
That's why it's so nice when things actually do work out and even better when something comes together even though I haven't been planning it at all.  Take this little field of snapdragons for example.  In early October I was driving with a friend. She takes a different route than I typically do.  I've never really minded taking the long way home and that day was no exception since I was in no hurry.
That's when I spied this field of snapdragons growing in perfect rows, just lazing in the sunshine, practically begging me to stop.  I didn't stop right then, but I did make a point to come back within just a few days to take some pics and I'm glad I did because not only was the lighting just perfect, but the frost swept through only a few days after my little photo shoot and all these lovely flowers were gone.
I was sorry to see them go so soon after discovering them, I know they'll be back next year and I'll to enjoy their beauty once more.  Plus, spring is nearly here with lots of glorious flowers on the way to enjoy.

Winter Plaid Morning

Plaid Lapel Rolled Sleeve Surplice Bowknot Dress Dresslily Review Blogger
Good morning on this lovely rainy winter morning.  It's our last day of Dresslily collab for this month and I thought this lovely Plaid Lapel Rolled Sleeve Surplice Bowknot Dress would be just right for this misty morning, but please pardon the raindrops in my hair.
Another spot on dress here and once again I'm glad that I got this style because it is chilly out and this soft flannel with three quarter sleeves feels so nice in the winter weather.  The little bow knot at the waist creates that perfect cinch for the hourglass shape and the neckline is heavenly.
I opted to wear a petticoat with dress because I love the vintage vibe created with that extra fullness to the skirt, but I could totally see myself wearing this dress for casual functions or just around the house, though it seems a shame to waste this style by staying at home in it.
Dresslily's great selection of Women's Fashion keeps me coming back to browse every week and I always find some new favorites.  This Plaid Dress didn't sit in my wishlist long before I had to have it.
I had high hopes for it and I was not disappointed.  I ordered a size small and I think it fits true to size.  The colors are bold and everything about this style just says, "Move over, June Cleaver, there's a new modest fashion star on the rise.

New Year's Collab with Dresslily

Vintage Plaid Mock Button Dress Review Dresslily Blogger

How's 2021 treating you so far?  I think a collab with Dresslily sounds like a pretty fabulous way to kick off the new year, so for this month's collab I've chosen a few cozy vintage style dresses and I am so pleased with the fit and the feel of this Vintage Plaid Mock Button Dress.

With styles ranging form dressy to casual and vintage to modern, Dresslily's Women's Fashion is easy on the eyes and the budget.  But, the deal gets even better, because my readers get free shipping on orders over $45 plus 22% off their order with code GBJKNO.

With colors of green, blue, yellow, and white this Vintage Plaid Mock Button Dress is made of a cotton/poly blend that feels like a soft flannel and was so wonderful on this particular morning as it was alternating between rain and snow while we were out taking photos.  My breath was visible on the air and on several occasions Mr. Bleu patiently paused and waited for it to dissipate, since I wasn't aiming for a foggy look.

I love the three quarter sleeves of this dress and although it has a mock button front, there is a side zipper.  This full skirt seemed best suited for a petticoat to me, but I know I'll wear it for more casual occasions as is and it will keep that vintage style.

As far as dresses go, this one is quite versatile in that you can dress it up or down, add a petticoat or not, and wear it out and about or just around the house.  It's stylish and comfortable and fits true to size.

Dresslily Plaid

Tartan Belted Surplice Dress from Dresslily Dress Review Blogger

I thought it would be fun to try a few things from Dresslily this month that are just right for the season.  So, my last post about Dresslily's womens fashion featured a Halloween dress that can be worn year round, and for today I thought it would be nice to try this Tartan Belted Surplice Dress.  Isn't it lovely!

Tartan Belted Surplice Dress from Dresslily Blogger Review

First thing to note about this dress is that it is made of a lightweight flannel, which I love.  Dresses made of thick flannel or wool are quite nice if you intend to be out in the weather a lot, but since moving back to the States, I don't have to be outdoors for long periods of time in all seasons for my daily commute.  I spend most of my time indoors during the work week, so dresses that are too heavy don't get worn much.  This Tartan dress is just perfect.  It's warm, but not overwhelming, so I can wear it to work or holiday events and be perfectly comfortable.

I love the plaid on this Tartan Surplice dress too.  It's not the typical autumn or Christmas colors, so I'm not limited to the times of year I can wear it.  I could easily see myself wearing this dress September to April.

As far as sizing goes, I normally wear a size XS-US, but for this dress I ordered a size small and it fits quite well.  So, pay close attention to the measurements and size chart when making your selection.  Remember that my readers get 22% off their purchase with code GBJKNO.

The design of this dress is really interesting and has some great features.  The V-wrap neckline--that's a surplice--with this lovely high waist piece that comes up under the bust.  Of course it has three quarter sleeves which are great for the fall and winter, and it comes with a belt.  It also has a full skirt which looks lovely as is, or can be worn with a knee length petticoat for that 1950s vintage look.

I am so pleased by the quality and fit of this dress (plus, did I mention, it has pockets!) and all for under $30.  There is more on the way from my collab with Dresslily, so check back with me again tomorrow!

I'll Hang the Moon For You

As you can see the colors have arrived and fall is here.  It's everywhere now, not just on my mountaintop farm.  It is a marvel, every single year.  This time of year means something else to me and maybe to a few of you too.  It means family gatherings.  My mum hosts a particular dinner each year for family that live close, but somehow we never see.  I enjoy catching up with them each year.  Our childhood was hard and it's good to see that we've all survived and some of us are even thriving.
This year as a special gift, mum spent hours, days, copying all the family photos that she has so that everyone could have a copy.  Funny how as you get older those keys to the past become so much more valuable to you.
So, while I was collecting my children from their weekly work day at the grandparents' house, I started leafing through the small piles of copied photos.  There were some that I had never seen.  They showed my dear little grandmother when she was young.  Her hair was still jet black and her eyes still had a sparkle when she smiled.  She wasn't yet worn down by hardships.  She didn't smile easily when I knew her, and she never talked about the past.
I sat admiring her face for a long while, her hair, her clothes in those old photos.  The way she smiled with her sister and mother and seemed more at ease, more herself.  Her mother was an amazing seamstress and kept my grandmother and her children in decent clothes with the most detailed designs.

I imagine that when she couldn't count on anything else in the world, she could count on her family, and wearing the clothes her mother created for her made her feel wrapped in her arms.  I imagine she learned to care for her children by her mother's example.  She made each of her children and grandchildren feel like we were her favorites.  I know I thought I was her favorite and I though she hung the moon.
If I could do one thing as a mother, if I could take just one lesson away from my time with my grandmother, it would be that.  I would keep my family together no matter what happens or how large it grows, or how much I dislike my new in-laws (and she did secretly dislike them!).  And no matter what choices they make or where life takes them, they would feel loved by me.  They would know that I was always there, willing to help however I could, and they would always be welcomed in my home.
I decided to dedicate this post to her--my grandmother when she still smiled.  I tried my best to copy her hairstyle from the 1940s, but I'm afraid I didn't do it justice.  She didn't really wear much make-up; she didn't need to.  And, when it came to dresses, my grandmother kept her colors natural and low key and her styles detailed and lovely, so I chose this Caterina dress and I think she would approve.  And if she didn't I would never know it.  I'd just go on feeling loved by her, like she thought I hung the moon.
