We just spent a lovely family weekend at the local comic convention. It was the perfect opportunity to wear some costumes that I spent a lot of time putting together and not nearly enough time showing off and we got to hear Q & A panels from some of our favorite B-Movie actors and a few niche voice actors. The girls enjoyed hanging out with friends and dressing up a little as well, and of course, we finished the day by getting dinner at our favorite Korean BBQ restaurant which we save for very special occasions, and the evening ended with ice cream. Over all, it was loads of fun and I'm glad we went.
Truth be told, I didn't want to go. Tickets were pricey, the car was full of giggling girls, the drive was long and I had so many chores I wanted to get done around the house that I felt a little stressed out just thinking about leaving it all for another week. But, then I looked at a different set of numbers besides the cost to my time and bank account. I looked at the fact that my oldest daughter will be moving out soon and my youngest will follow soon after. I looked at the number of family days like this that we have left and suddenly, everything else seemed trivial. So, I cleared my schedule and my mind of all the worries that threaten to keep me from enjoying myself and spent some time with my family.
Sometimes I think these little days together are better than a big vacation because we get to take them throughout the year in different seasons and at different events so that unlike a trip to just one place, like say the beach, which is my favorite place and no one else's, there ends up being something for everyone. At the end of it all, everything on my to-do list was still waiting for me, but I get some much needed time having fun with my family while we're still under one roof.
