My Stable of Unicorns

Unicorn Necklace, Unicorn Mug, Unicorn Figurine from Etsy. com
My closet is filled with Unicorns--those lovely things that I either didn't find in time or simply couldn't afford right off the rack.  But, with a little patience and a lot of persistence, I keep managing to find all those things that made me do a double take.  I think I like the challenge of chasing those illusive beauties to make them mine for a third of their original cost.  That's the goal anyway--though sometimes I just miss out completely.  Like that Eva Franco Matryoshka dress we're all sad we couldn't pay $350 for....aw well, I'm still searching for that one.
Recently I added two more to my stable of unicorns.  The first is the outgoing sister to my beige laser cut peter pan collar top by HD in Paris which you can see in this post.  This version is bright green with a blue collar and accents and was worn on several television shows when it came out, which made it even harder to find usually not cheap.  I got it for $20 on PoshMark!
The second was this petal dress by Eva Franco.  I found a short version of the skirt on ThredUp, but I didn't get it bought, so someone else got a great skirt for about $20.   Normally retailing for $120, I found this midi length dress with tags still attached for under $40 on PoshMark.  This is going to be the perfect dress to wear to a wedding this spring.  I can't wait to get outfit photos done and share them here.

I'm Seeing Hearts: Upcoming Dress Review

Scoop, Wood Heart, Cookies, and Coffee Print available at Etsy.com

About a month ago I was having coffee with a friend when out of the corner of my eye I spied a local woman in a gorgeous red heart knit dress.  I wanted to jump up out of my seat and ask the woman where she found that dress, but I didn't want to be rude to my friend, so I sat quietly and waited. The woman left before our chat ended.  I figured she found that dress in some cute Tokyo boutique, so I'd likely never find it myself.
Flash forward to three days ago when I was browsing ThredUp and spotted this Yumi Heart Dress for $26.99.  It was cute and I was instantly reminded of that even prettier heart dress I saw in the coffee shop.
I liked this dress, it's very unique, however on closer inspection I decided not to buy it.  I don't care for the cut (it has no waist) and for the mix of fabrics (heavy knit with a faux suede border?  blech).  Even if it seemed completely hopeless, which it did, it renewed my interest in finding that lovely red heart dress.
I decided to do a quick search to see if I could find anything similar.  To my utter surprise and delight, within five minutes I found the very dress that was so clearly etched into my memory at not one but two different shops!  Behold the gorgeousness of the illusive red heart dress!
The dress on the right is from AliExpress has long sleeves, and comes in a variety of colors for $49.90

I chose the $24.69 dress from Ebay, because....well,.... this blog is all about me being fashionable and thrifty at the same time, duh-doy.  As with all my other purchases of late, it is headed to my home in the States and a review will just have to wait til I make it home.  In the mean time if someone out there gives this dress a try in either the short sleeve or long sleeve version, leave a comment on how well you liked it and send me a pic to post with my review as well.

Afternoon Tea

Did you ever throw a tea party for your dollies when you were little, or maybe you were able to include a few friends too?  Having tea parties was one of my favorite things to do when I was little; I thought that was a part of being a grown-up lady.  Eventually I began to wonder why my mother never went to tea parties and in fact none of the women I knew went to tea parties.  Why was that?  I was determined to change that when I grew up.  So, one lovely October day, my mother and I hosted a tea party for all the special women in our lives and it was wonderful.  There wasn't a frowning face in the entire room.  We vowed to not let this be last time we had tea together.
After that life changed in many ways and it just wasn't possible to have tea with these special women.  There were still plenty of opportunities for tea with my girls.  Sometimes they hosted; sometimes I did.  It was always special and fun.  This year I decided to make it a proper tea with a proper tea service.  My daughters are old enough now to be trusted with china and old enough to be in charge of making some of the treats to go with our tea.  Since my mom was here visiting, we had a proper tea party on a summer afternoon, and now that our time here is coming to a close I am looking forward to hosting another tea party (or maybe a whole bunch) for all the little girls and little girls at heart in my life.   In the mean time, I'm just dreaming and thought I'd share my favorite tea time picks:
