Winter was always my time to hibernate. I'd curl up in all my layers and stay there til June. Forget about anything fashionable, I was just trying not to freeze. But, then I spent three years living on an island in the Pacific Northwest and during that time there were approximately two days when the temperature reached 70 degree F. TWO DAYS! The rest of those years were spent in coats, hats, scarves, and woolly socks. Towards the end, I was pretty fed up. I missed my cute dresses. I missed my ballet flats. I missed the sunshine most of all. So, on one particularly cloudy afternoon, I went out to the local shops with a mission to find a way to wear my dresses again. I returned with five pairs of tights in different colors. It took me a while to figure out how to wear the tights with the right outfits, and I got more than a few sideways glances along with a couple of full on stares at my outfits before I reached a happy balance. Now I'm an old pro at it so, for toady's post I thought I'd give you a few tips for wearing tights.
1. Color or Neutral. I have a couple of pairs of black tights and they're great for when you want to keep your outfit chill, but it's nice to have a few versatile shades as well to really kick up an outfit too. I recommend red, burgundy, purple, and green and if you can rock a mustard yellow, throw that in the mix too. Adding that to your ensemble can really make for a standout look.
2. Assorted textures. It's important if you wear a lot of dresses, like me, to have some tights in thick cotton, or wool blend for really cold days, and a few nylon pairs. Nylon creates a more sleek silhouette, but it doesn't always keep you warm.
3. Textures and prints. If you have a mainly neutral outfit, printed tights an add a wonderful detail of interest to your outfit. Likewise, neutral tights with a texture just add a little extra something to your look.
