The Selkie French Puff La Belle Etoile Dress

Selkie La Belle Etoile French Puff Dress
Well, my crushing guilt has got the better of me again.  In a previous post I spoke a little unkindly of the design of the Selkie puff dresses and then I felt bad about it.  I thought perhaps I should have tried one before I disparaged them all.

So, after much deliberation and also a very generous promo code during Selkie's birthday bash, I bought this beautiful French Puff dress in La Belle Etoile print.

When, oh when will I learn to trust my instincts?  My assessments about the design and fit of the puff dress were correct, although I do find that because this particular style is in cotton, it doesn't have that distracting tummy poof and creates a nice silhouette, and this print does have an authentic 18th century French royalty vibe that I love.

Since the Ritz gown was too tight, I sized up one size for this dress and found that it was much too big.  I have to wear a padded bra to make the chest fit properly and even then, it feels like it may fall at any moment.  I joined a few Selkie groups and I wish I'd done that before buying because the general advice is that the cotton dresses fit larger than the organza and you should always go one size down for cotton.

Another thing I should note about this dress is that while the cotton corrects the awkward poof, this fabric is so heavy it will be impossible to wear it June through August and yet, the style isn't really conducive to layering or wearing a cardigan over those extra puffy sleeves.  What to do?  I'll have to think about it.  I've seen Selkie layer this style with sheer long-sleeve dresses, so maybe that's an option.

Selkie released a letter along with their new Petit Trianon collection stating that they had listened to their customers and were working to correct the issues with sizing and design for the Spring 2022 collection.  I am hopeful for the new year, but the reviews of the Petit Trianon dresses are already pouring in and the negative ones seem to be the same old issues.  I've even seen one of the new designs pop up on a resale site already because while they claimed to have lengthened the bodice, the customers say they're still way too short.  The seller did change her mind after a week or two and I saw her later in a Selkie group saying she was glad she reconsidered, so there's hope.

The bottom line is that it's a shame that there issues with these dresses, not just because they're expensive, but also because I think in many ways Selkie is heading in the right direction and making beautiful things.  I'm still hopeful that they'll keep working on it and get there eventually.  As far as this La Belle Etoile dress goes I do like many things about it, I just need to find the right shoes to go with it.
