Thrifty Layers: ootd

In the spirit of my last post on the benefits of second hand shopping, I thought I'd feature this outfit which is almost entirely second hand.  The skirt and purse were purchased on the same visit, so I knew that the oranges matched.  However, the skirt needed to be hemmed up two inches to make the length more flattering.  The blouse was taken right off the mannequin on a later visit.  I wasn't even thinking of putting them all together at the time, but as soon as I got the blouse home, it just seemed right.
My first instinct was to pair this set with black shoes and jacket, however when I held it up next to the brown sweater, it softened the colors in the plaid and in turn the overall look is now warmer.  I was a little uncertain that a drawstring peplum top would look nice with a skirt, but it hits at just the right place on my waist and flows well into the skirt.  My thrift store purchases probably totaled about $25 and I'm looking forward to putting them together in lots of different ways.

I Believe in Second Chances: The Benefits of Resale

I love fashion, there's no point in denying it.  What I don't always love is the hefty price tags that come with gorgeous clothes.  I have other people in my life to think about, not to mention trying to plan for the future.  So, how do I balance my love fashion and putting together different outfits to share here on my blog, with keeping a budget and living within my means?  Two words: Resale Shops.  (And another important word duo: self-control.  Sometimes it's just not in my budget and I have to tell myself, "no," and walk away.)

There is something therapeutic about thrift store shopping; I usually walk out feeling accomplished over a great find.   There's also a little comfort in the notion that no matter where I've lived I've usually found at least one good resale shop.

Of course the internet is loaded with places to buy second-hand or even first-hand items at a deeply discounted price if you're not a fan of the brick and mortar stores.  Everything I own from Anthropologie has come from one of these sites.  I just can't pay $250 per dress.  Even on sale I usually can't afford to purchase directly from the store.  And most of the dresses and tops I've bought are still new, tags on, for a fraction of the retail price.  My two faves from Anthro are these lace dresses.

They were originally $188.  And although the website says that one of them was on clearance for $9.95, I can guarantee that my size was long gone by that time.  So, I kept an eye on the resale sites and eventually found these at the right price.  They both had the tags still on, no flaws and I saved well over half the price.

Another Anthro find was this red scallop dress.  It was worn by leading ladies on a couple of television shows and Taylor Swift also wore it, so it took a long time before it finally turned up at a reasonable price.  In store it was $128.00.  I found it in excellent pre-owned shape for a little over half.  (there's always a mark-up when people know someone famous has worn it).

And last but not least is this gorgeous plaid Bernie Dexter dress.  It was originally $156, but I found it for $25.  It was missing the belt and had been worn once, but it was in excellent condition, and well worth the price.

So now that you've seen some of my favorite bargain hunting conquests, let's talk about how to do it.

Location, Location, Location; Choosing Your Hunting Ground:

I grew up in a very small town surrounded in a 40 mile radius by lots of other small towns.  Most of what I found in the thrift shops came from the closets of someone's deceased aged relatives.  It was out of date, out of style and more than a little bit sad.  But I learned some very important things:

1.  Every now and then you'll find a vintage diamond in the rough.  Some gorgeous gown or funky shirt whose value was passed over.  You can be the owner of a unique item for a low price.

2.  Bigger cities tend to have better selection.
This has been my experience and it stands to reason that more people donating equals more variety.

3.  Cities with a booming economy tend to have a higher quality of resale items.
Again this has consistently been my experience in 20 or so years of thrift shopping.  And again, it's pretty common sense that cities where people are making more money have people who are spending more money for clothes and spending it more often to keep up with trends.

4.  Military towns have high turn over and unbeatable bargains.
Cities with high turn-over rates like those with large military bases will also have some great buys as folks in a hurry don't have time for yard sales or waiting for someone to buy it on Ebay.  They just need to unload their extra stuff before the movers come.  Everyone benefits.

When hitting the resale shops, some things to keep in mind:

1.  Only Shop Your Size
It doesn't matter if there's a gorgeous dress and it's only $10.  If it's not your size (and you're not or do not have an expert seamstress to alter it) it's a waste of money and it will gather dust in your closet instead of being a great bargain for someone who can actually wear it.  Yes, I occasionally break this rule if I'm certain I can tailor it.

2.  Quality Counts
I've done it many times; "yeah, it's not in great shape, but it's so cheap."  Trust me on this, just pass on it and move on down the aisle.  There's a reason people give stuff away and sometimes that reason is that it's junk.  A missing button, a single snag, or a very small spot, aren't deal breakers.  However, if an item has large or multiple rips, stains, snags or if it's anything beyond a little normal wear, it's not worth it.

3.  Even Thrift Stores Charge More For Name Brand
I've been in lots of thrift stores that have a special section for really nice stuff.  All the regular purses were lying in a heap at the back, but the well organized rack near the register was for name-brand bags and they naturally charged more.  Even so, these items are usually way less than you'd find them anywhere else.

Another option is online marketplaces like Ebay for second hand or Etsy for vintage.  They can be wonderful for the variety they offer.  I love to clean out my own closet, take things that haven't seen much wear and send them out to good homes for a reasonable price.  I usually use whatever I earn toward the purchase of something new I have my eye on.  My closet stays clutter free and my budget stays in balance.  Online sellers are more often open to price negotiation as well.

Tips for Navigating Online ReSale

1.  Do Your Research
Since a lot of online sales at sites like Ebay are non-returnable, do a little research before you buy.  If it's a recognizable brand or from a shop like ModCloth or Anthropologie that has customer reviews, go read what others had to say.  If the market seems to be flooded with a certain dress, it could be because everyone hated it and the company had trouble selling it.  Also use these home sites to see what the original (and clearance) price was to make sure you're not over-paying.

2.  Ask the Right Questions
If it's from an individual seller, then it's probably something they've personally worn.  Ask them how the item fit and request measurements for the item to compare with something you have at home.  Getting this info can be valuable in making your final decision on whether or not to buy.

3.  Be Prepared for Disappointment & Know Your Rights as a Buyer
It's happened to me countless times with online second hand.  An item looks great in the photos and I've read the measurements carefully and compared them to my own, and yet when the item arrives it has some stain or hole, or is totally the wrong fit, and I'm stuck with it.  Another problem I've run into is a seller who never gets around to shipping the item.  Several weeks ago I had to pester a non-responsive seller after a cute little purse hadn't shipped.  The seller instantly responded to every message while we were negotiating the buying price, but as soon as payment cleared, I couldn't get a word out of her.  Fortunately most sites have some sort of customer protection.  For this particular site,  the process was quick and easy, but for sites like Ebay it can take much longer and be more involved, so take some time to read up on it or contact customer service if you're having trouble.

I hope these tips will give you some confidence as you head out there.  Happy thrifting!

Furry Up Now:ootd

I've had this Retrolicious dress for several months now and I still find new ways to wear it.  This time my only real accessories are my antique & vintage Kodak brownies.  I love these old cameras, they're so fun to play with and I'm working on getting them back to being functional!

Bay Breeze: Dress Review

This blue and ivory dress with its geometric and stripe print looks like it's made from ocean billows.  The straps are adjustable and I found the fit very flattering.  The shell and lining are both a lightweight polyester.  I can't wait to wear this to the beach.
A strapless bra is a must with this dress, though you may need something besides just that as the sides slope down far enough to show the side of a bra.  Other than that, this is a fabulous dress, and I highly recommend it.

New Quirk City: Dress Review

New Quirk City, do they every run out of puns at ModCloth?
I waited and waited for this dress to go on sale, but when it looked like they were going to run out of my size, I went ahead and bought it.  I wish now that I had kept on waiting.  It just went on sale for 40% off.
The print is adorable and the cut is very flattering, but the fabric feels like cardboard and doesn't move well.  When I raise my arms, the shoulders pop-up in a really silly way.  I can't imagine what will happen when I wash it, but I get the feeling it will be a beast to iron.
So, overall I can't whole-heartedly recommend the dress, but I can't entirely condemn it either.

Travel: The Imperial Gardens

In the 1600s, after a lengthy civil war, Japan became unified under the rule of a Shogun.  Though Japan still had an emperor, his role was mainly ceremonial and he made is home in Kyoto, while the shogun ruled from Edo (current day Tokyo).
During this time to peace and prosperity, Japan isolated itself from the rest of the world.  It wasn't until American ships arrived in the 1860s with a firm intent of opening up trade that the isolation of Japan ended and with it the rule of the shoguns.
Power was restored to the emperor.  The shoguns castle at Edo also now belonged to the emperor and remains so even today.
Although the Imperial Gardens still belong to Japan's royal family, they are open daily to the public and provide a small, peaceful respite from the sprawling metropolis of Tokyo.
Last summer we were able to spend a few days exploring Tokyo.
Among all the skyscrapers and the attractions, we found our way to this peaceful place.  After an hour walking the garden paths through trees and over koi ponds, we almost forgot we were surrounded on all sides by one of the largest cities in the world.
The foundation of a castle guard tower constructed in 1638 still stands along with a few other pieces of stonework.  We spent quite a bit of time watching the swans and and fish taking a leisurely swim.  I had to capture a few of the koi in photos.  They were playful and oh so beautiful even while burrowing into the mud searching for scraps.

At the end of this lovely day, after a delicious meal and a very crowded train ride, we were walking back to our hotel and were fortunate enough to catch a lunar eclipse.

What's Up Dot: ootd

Polka dots + a peter pan collar = almost too cute for words.
I stumbled across this chiffon dress on Ebay and knowing how Forever 21 dresses fit, I purchased it even though it's not technically my size.  I love it, and more styles with it will surely follow.

If I haven't talked about resale sites before, let me say that they are incredibly handy for finding pretty dresses at a great price.
In the next few weeks I'll be posting my tips for resale shopping both for online and brick and mortar shops.

Embroidered Vintage

I've always loved those boho dresses covered in embroidery and so airy and light they dance in the breeze.  When I was a kid, I secretly hoped that my parents' travels would take them deep enough into the southwest for them to buy me one, but sadly they never did.  Instead I had a lovely pair of beaded moccasins that I wore until there were holes in them and life was good.
I've never really actively pursued owning one of these dresses since then, but sometimes great things just come to us if we wait.  I don't remember how I stumbled onto this vintage dress about eight years ago, but it was love at first sight and I saved oh so many profits from my Etsy shop to afford it.  It is still my favorite example of an embroidered dress and one of my daughters has already called dibs on it.

For this outfit, I wore my vintage glass emerald earrings that I made myself, a beaded pink cardigan from American Eagle Outfitters and and my rocket dog flats from ModCloth.

Artist Spotlight: Daniella Fishburne with Fried Fish Photography

I can't remember exactly what I was looking for when I first saw her work, but I instantly felt like I'd stepped into some beautiful, other world.  The genius behind these gorgeous images is Daniella Fishburne  at FriedFishPhotography.etsy.com and I am so happy to be able to share her work and little bit about the artist behind these breathtaking images.  In her bio on Etsy Daniella says,

"I’ve been drawn to art for as long as I can remember. My childhood memories are filled with sketch pads and clay covered hands, but nothing seemed to capture my heart until I discovered photography.  I've always had an active imagination, ever since I was a little girl. Imagining the impossible, I would often get lost in my own little world for hours. For some, this may seem like a waste of time, but I like to believe that anything is possible and, after years of daydreaming, I am finally able to turn my dreams into reality.  In 2014 I began exploring my own inner life, thoughts, and feelings through a 52 week self-portrait project. In that sense, this body of work is very personal, almost like a visual diary."

Composing a dream, turning the ethereal into the real is such a enormous undertaking and yet, image after image she succeeds and we get lost in her daydreams too.

Bleu Avenue:  Thank you so much for talking with me.  When I look at your photos, I feel like I'm looking into a dream. From what do you draw inspiration?

Daniella:  Thank you for taking the time to share my work. A lot of my inspiration comes from daydreaming. Sometimes I drift off into my own little world and it can get me into trouble. I often find it difficult to focus, but my art allows me to channel those thoughts into something productive, so being a chronic daydreamer actually turned out to be a good thing. I love being able to create the imaginary worlds I dream up and share them with others.

B: There is magic in daydreams.  I love to see that light in my girls' eyes when they're dreaming up some story or drawing.  They're big fans of strong women, so most of their ideas involve regular girls that turn into some kind of super hero.
I guess everyone has a particular idea that they like more than others.  To what theme are you most drawn?

D:  I think I'm most drawn to the sky, especially the night sky. I love watching clouds float by and I'm absolutely mesmerized by the moon. I think those elements have become a common theme in my work. I like to believe that anything is possible and I hope that my work inspires others to believe that too. It also provides a nice little escape from reality.

B:  There is a sort of process involved in creating something and as we do something over and over, that process gets refined.  How has your work or your vision for your work changed with time and experience?

D:  I think everyone’s work changes as they grow as an artist. My work has become increasingly more surreal and my editing techniques are a lot more subtle since I first started. I had a tendency to over use textures in the beginning, but with time and practice I'm learning that less is more.

B:  Absolutely, as we learn, we grow and as we grow we learn.  It's a blessing to have friends, family, or mentors to help guide us now and then along then way.  What has been the best advice you've been given or tip that you've found either for your photography or another area in your life?

D:  Always follow your heart. You are the only one who knows what’s right for you. If your intuition is steering your life in a new direction, don’t be afraid to follow a new path. Change is scary, but if you follow your heart, then you’ll always end up right where you’re supposed to be.

B:  You've mentioned in your Etsy Bio that you'd like to publish a collection of your photos in a coffee table book. What else do you think the future holds for you artistically?

D:  I still hope to publish a coffee table book someday and I’d also like to see my work on book covers. I recently signed with an agency that works exclusively with publishers, so hopefully one day soon I’ll see my work sitting on a shelf in my local bookstore. I also have a small series that will be published in "Somerset Digital Studio" in the fall, which is a wonderful magazine dedicated to digital art. I'm very excited about the future possibilities, but at the end of the day what I really want most is to inspire others to believe in themselves and the possibility that dreams really can come true. The key is perseverance.

B: Very true, the best way to achieve your dreams is to hold tight and keep working toward them.  Thank you so much for talking with me today and I look forward to seeing that book and all your future photographic creations.

Up and Away: ootd

Perhaps the obvious choice for a title, but I am loving this balloon purse by Sleepyville Critters.  True it's not big enough to hold much more than my wallet and phone, but it is such a great accessory.  Also, I need to mention that this dress by Geode is currently 50% off at ModCloth.com

This dress is slightly roomy in the bodice, but nothing too serious.  On the pros side of the dress, it has lovely details and color and is very easy to dress up or down.  Overall, I highly recommend it.  These shoes are also on sale at ModCloth right now.

Par Avion: ootd

Not a new dress, but a new style.  This dress by Fervour was my first ModCloth purchase and still my favorite after two years.  I usually wear it as-is or with a pale pink cardigan, but I had a notion that this little beauty might look even sharper with a blazer and a crossbody purse.  I can't over sell the need for a blazer or two in one's wardrobe.  Cardigans are wonderful, but they'll never give you the shape or polish that a good blazer will.
