The mornings are still crisp and we bundle up in coats before we go outdoors. It's been so cold that our firewood has run low this winter. We've had to cut more recently which means that it hasn't had long enough to season properly, so it's nearly impossible to get it to burn. By the time we finally get a good fire going, the day has warmed up enough that we don't need one. This is how it was when I was a little girl too, and back then, rather than waste the firewood, we dressed in layers we could shed as the day got warmer--if it got warmer. Normally I tell my children to do the same, but today is a free day and we have nowhere to be this morning, so our layers consisted of bathrobes, thick socks, and blankets followed by coveralls when we had to go out and feed the animals. Today was garden planting day as well. It was easier than last year; all our composting has made the soil richer and the back breaking task of sifting the rocks out of the beds last year made it easier to simply till and then plant this time. It's still early spring, so we've planted cabbage, lettuce, turnips, and sweet peas along with nasturtium at the four corners. The other things, like tomatoes, corn, and cucumbers will have to wait to go in the ground until it gets a little warmer, but for now, I'm happy to have the garden underway and happy that it's finally spring.
