Valentine's day has rolled around again, and I've noticed that my posts about this holiday tend to be what I like to call up-beat bummers also known by the rest of the world as "realistic." This year's post promises to be more of the same. Why? Because. Tradition. That's why.
Lately, like for the last five years, I've been in a television rut. Nothing interests me. It all seems like vapid trash. But, sometimes, I need to sit down and zone out, and in particular to laugh, especially at the end of a long and difficult day. So, to remedy the t.v. drought, I've taken to going back to old favorites to start from the beginning and watch them again.
My one and only rule is that I don't binge watch. There's no point really, because I've seen them before and I know they're not making any more, so I have to pace myself and save them for those tough days. I've revisted, News Radio, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Frasier, Psych, and most recently 30 Rock.
I've always related to 30 Rock. There's a little Liz Lemon in all of us, but I feel like I have more than my fair share, down to the way she played with her grandmother's elbow skin and her generally sour attitude towards Valentine's Day. I may not have taken it as far as deciding to call it Anna Howard Shaw day in honor of the women's suffrage leader like L.L. did, but I've gotten pretty close.
Like Liz, I've never had a spectacular Valentine's Day and more often than not they've been disastrous, so I think it's only natural to go through a time of refusing to celebrate. But then, in a departure from L.L.'s character....I had to open the door to love in all the forms it takes and the possibility of having maybe not a perfect storybook V-Day, but a splendid one all the same.
Since that turning point, I can safely say, they've all been good and mainly because I decided to turn them into a day of celebrating the fact that I love people and they love me too instead of waiting for Romeo to sweep me off my feet.
Every year, I wear something particularly pink, girly, and/or covered in hearts and I do something special, typically handmade, for all the people close to my heart. Sometimes they reciprocate. Sometimes they don't. But that's not the point. Love is all about how much you give rather than how much you get.
February isn't just the month for lovers, it's the month of love and it's important to celebrate all the love that you have in your life, because love in itself is the very greatest gift.
