Jingle All the Meandering Way

This is the time of year when many little tikes are gearing up for the big day and hoping for the costly techy toys that their parents would never buy them otherwise.  I never once asked for tech when I was a kid.  It was all toys.  Then it was clothes, but gadgets never interested me or even really seemed like a gift.  It's like looking at old photos and seeing the classic housewife getting a new vacuum cleaner and you kind of go...uhhh, is this a gift?  Tech, like vacuum cleaners have always seemed like useful tools, but not toys--even the ones that are intended as toys.  Someone once bought my brother a Simon game.  Watching his frustrated attempts to tap the colored buttons in the same complicated pattern as the game from memory, I knew he must have done something horrible to deserve that "gift."
When I was in my early 20s and hopelessly bored during the one and only summer I took off from university, so bored I wished I could just be in class taking tests and pulling my hair out, I was introduced to a few benign cutesy games which I really enjoyed...in the total absence of anything else to do.  One of the games I used to love was called Animal Crossing.  It was on the Nintendo Game Cube and I played it for years until I had pretty much done all the interesting things there were to be done.  They've since released newer versions like New Leaf and New Horizons which are so much more involved I don't think you ever really run out of things to do.  I know because my children are constantly playing them and have been for years now.
At this point you might be wondering what on earth any of this has to do with anything.  Hang with me, we'll get there.  The game involved moving to a town, earning money, helping locals, planting things and celebrating holidays.  Around this time of year you got to meet a character called Jingle. Jingle is basically the Santa Claus character but for "reasons" it's a deer called Jingle instead of a jolly saintly fat man being chauffeured by a herd of aerial deer.  The Jingle character was pretty cute and I don't mind a little appropriation to make something new.  Let's face it, cultures have been borrowing off each other since the dawn of time and the results can be pretty awesome--I'm talking about you, American-made Korean BBQ Taco!

Is she nearly to the point?  Yes, indeed.  I like it when we borrow a little from here and a little from over there, when we press up against an idea, suggestive instead of shrieking, and make something unique.  It worked for my favorite taco place, it worked for Animal Crossing, and it can work in the fashion world too.
So, borrowing an idea from Animal Crossing and Jingle, today's outfit is a bit of Christmas cheer without being too on the (shiny red) nose.  A little khaki sundress with a duck hunting print from my favorite novelty print dress maker, Ting--proprietress of The Other Sparrows.  I paired it with a thrifted forest green bow top, green tights, and of course my deer beret.  Christmas-y?  Yes, in its own way.
Don't be afraid to borrow here and there to make a look that is uniquely you.  It's ok to give credit to your sources for good measure, but ultimately we're all influenced by others all the time and it's ok to blend all those influences into our own style.  So, I guess one good thing did come from all those wasted months of playing video games, just don't tell my children that I said that.  As far as they're concerned, I'm still firmly against them.  And, look at that, in my own meandering way, I tied it all together again.  Good for me and thank you, Jingle.

A Christmas Song

The Christmas Song
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like eskimos
Everybody knows a turkey and some
mistletoe
Help to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight
They know that Santa's on his way
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly
And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said many times,
many ways
Merry Christmas to you
They know that Santa's on his way
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly
Green White Deer Print Dress by Cissy's May from The Other Sparrows
And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said many times,
many ways
Merry Christmas to you
Merry Christmas to you

Holly Jolly

How are you feeling about the holidays this year?  This time of year can be super stressful for many of us, add to that the bizarre year that it's been and I don't know exactly how to feel.  Am I stressed, fearful, depressed, thankful, totally over all of it?
Sometimes instead of letting our emotions rule us, telling us how to feel and react, we have to resort to a Joe Friday approach, "just the facts, ma'am."  Feelings are untrustworthy at best.  Focus on the facts or better yet, focus on the truth instead.  The truth never changes.
As far as stress goes, ask yourself what's got you stressed and how much of it is within your control?  Chances are you can manage a lot of that stress.  Freaking out over buying gifts for everyone?  Get some gift cards or bake some cookies and send them with a nice note on festive paper explaining that you're taking a bit of the pressure off yourself, but you love each person all the same.
Money got you worried?  Maybe you just be honest about your finances this year and say, "I just can't" to a lot of the sideline stuff so you won't go deeper into debt.  Depressed?  Get out there and serve others!  There's no better way to cure depression than by helping others instead of obsessing about your problems.
This next part is really going to offend people with delicate sensibilities, but I really don't care because it needs to be said.  As far as being afraid goes, Tell your fears to sack up or shut up.  Life is risk.  Every moment of everyday we're all taking our chances. There's never been a time in all of history that was without conflict, trials, dangers, and most of them were more difficult and life threatening than anything we face today.  Get out there and live!

And, if you can, go beyond just living and love your life.  Love the people in your life and make sure they know just how much they mean to you, right now and every chance you get.  Make this the best holiday season ever!

Decking The Halls

Hell Bunny Candy Cane Christmas Shirt Blouse Top
It's time to get out the Christmas stuff.  Thanksgiving is long gone and December is here.  And, hey, remember that post I did a few days ago about turning over the decorating responsibilities to my daughters?  Well, that didn't work out at all.  I ended up getting the day off.  Sooooooo, I had to lend a hand.

Since there was no way around it, I duly climbed over and squeezed between all the stacks of things in our garage to retrieve the decorations which always start out at the front in January and have worked their way to very back corner by December when we need them.
Each year I expect to be bitten by a poisonous spider or get snagged on rusty metal and have to get a tetanus shot, but so far I've escaped unmaimed.  For the past few years I've had to work on our decoration day and that was fine with me, but this year I had the day off.  So, I whipped up some raspberry thumbprint cookies, made us each a cup of tea, and lent a hand in trimming the tree and decking the halls.  And we had our hang-ups, no way around that with two teenagers, but in the end we did have a wonderful time together.

Season's Greetings

Christmastime has come around again.  It seems like I've only just taken my decorations down and here it is, time to put them up again.
I often remember an old saying at this time of year that goes The days are long, but the years are short.  How true that is.
Last year marked the end of the childhood Christmases at our house as my daughters didn't ask for a single toy.  Instead it was all clothes, make-up, and electronics.  I knew it was coming, but it still took me by surprise.
I'm sad to see those years of childhood wonder are behind us now, but it's still amazing to watch my children grow and change and I appreciate their talents and their sense of humor in a different way now as they come into their own.
I haven't given up on Christmas; I still love this time of year and my family does too and now that my children are older, I've been able to completely turn over the job of decorating to them.
I thought that letting go of doing the decorating would be tough, but it was the easiest and best holiday decision I've ever made!
It's so wonderful to leave the house in the morning and come home from work to find the tree up, the cards hung over doorways, the stocking and mantle taken care of, and nothing left for me to do, but enjoy.
Not only do my girls do a wonderful job (they've got a great sense of style) but it allows me to focus on other aspects of the season that get overlooked--like making hot cocoa from scratch and baking homemade cookies for the neighbors.
No matter where you find yourself at this time of year or in what season of life you find yourself, the most important thing is to surround yourself with family and friends and give them the very best gift anyone can get--Love.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, dear friends.  May you give and find love throughout the year.
