4 Tips for Wearing Snake Prints

When it comes to those long fellows in the grass , as Emily Dickenson so famously described them, I myself  tend to take a live and let live approach--unless it's poisonous and threatening to strike in which case it has violated the "let live" portion of our unspoken agreement and I will use whatever means necessary to defend myself and my loved ones--but I don't believe in taking a life if you don't have to.  I am the kind who has swerved to deliberately avoid killing a harmless snake--c'mon, they can't help being all wriggly and giving us the hibbety-jibs.  But, regardless of how you feel about snakes snake prints are trending.  And there are plenty of live and let live animal friendly options out there if you're anxious to try out this look.  If animal prints have never been your cup of tea in the past, I would encourage you to get a new cup that has some room for the most up to date trends.  And while you're mulling it over, I've compiled a few tips to help ease you into it.

1.  Start Small or Start Big?

I'm not exactly the type to dive in to most trends, I'm more of a sit on the side and dip my toes for a while (a veeeery long while sometimes) until someone either pushes me or I just can't stand to stay out of the water anymore.  In this particular instance, I decided to dive in with a snake print BodyCon Dress from FemmeLuxe because it has some great desing features, but more on that in a moment.  It's also perfectly fine to start with something small like a snake print belt or bag or maybe a cute pair of heels.  FemmeLuxe has a whole collection of snake prints to choose from, but I was especially drawn to this dress because not only is it up to trend, but it has some lovely classic design elements that helped me make my decision to buy.  One of those was that it was a basic black and white print.  Everything is more understated (read into that classic and classy) when it's in monochrome.  The asymmetrical hem line helps to break up the look and add visual interest.  A couple more classic elements to this dress are the mock turtle neck and the form fitting shape.  Beatnik vibe, anyone?  

2.  Snake Prints Can Be Slimming

Did you ever hear that vertical lines are slimming?  Well, it's true, but what's even better is that snake prints like this one have a vertical line pattern which is slimming and less harsh to the eyes than solid lines and because the pattern is broken up it does a great job of masking trouble spots.  Throw in a black moto jacket like the one I'm wearing or a sleek trench coat for an even more svelt silhouette.  

3.  How to Accessorize

The best way to accessorize is not so simple, but it doesn't have to be complicated either.  As I mentioned above, this dress was giving me some serious mod vibes, so I decided to really play up the mod element in this dress by adding a thick black headband, vintage style buckle peep toes, and a leather jacket.  I kept the make-up true to mod style with a black eyeliner and nude lips and added some cat eye sunglasses for effect.  Style your look for the place you'll wear it, but remember when trying a new look, it's ok to tone your make-up and accessories down to really let your new trendy piece shine.

4.Snake Prints Are Edgy...

...but that's not a bad thing.  When we think of the word edgy we tend to think of someone high-powered (maybe even hot blooded) bad girl another b-word also comes to mind when I hear the word edgy.  It's silly, but that's what we do in our heads.  If you've been holding back for this reason, I encourage you to reconsider the way you define edgy and replace whatever you've been telling yourself with the words Fierce, Modern, and Confident.  Those are far better ways to describe a woman with an edge.  She's someone who knows herself so well and is so certain of her abilities she isn't easily shaken.  She's earned her place in the world and she knows it.
