"What is the purpose of art?" If you do a quick search of this question you'll most likely get some absurd answers. One of my top results was that art was a means of exposing the corruption of the ruling class, but since most works of art are something that have historically and even currently something only the wealthier people in the world can afford, no artist would have used their work to call their patrons monsters and stayed in the business for very long. So, i we can immediately cross off such preposterous terms, I'll ask again, What is the purpose of art?
I remember my professor asking this question on my very first day of Art Appreciation at my university. You might guess that we would then spent the entire semester answering that question, but we didn't. By the end of the first day, we answered the question. Once we knew the purpose of art, we could then discover what is art. Art, in its purest form is intended to elevate our senses, to make us feel and to evoke feelings so strong we cannot put them into words. In that way, art is not just limited to paintings and sculptures. It is architecture, pottery, and yes, even clothing. Some people collect paintings; I collect dresses.
There is something about a beautiful dress. It turns heads; it makes even the most humble wearer suddenly look and feel regal. We all want that feeling, that moment that elevation of our senses.
