...

I'm not quite back in the swing of daily life after our mini break, and unfortunately, the autumn colors still have not made an appearance, so today's post is another day at our charming little air b&b.  Hopefully fresh fall pics will be here by next week, you know, now that autumn is nearly over :D

Studio Work

This houndstooth dress was a long admired piece from Stop Staring.  I couldn't find it in my size, but that actually worked out well, because I had it tailored at the waist and now it fits like a dream, without all that pesky puckering across the thighs that I always get with my pencils dresses.  I've taken it out into the autumn world for photos before, but I thought this year we would try it out in the studio.
I'm becoming a bit of a wimp about getting up early to go out into the freezing cold to take photos.  I enjoy sleeping in and having a nice, relaxing morning and I simultaneously hate being cold, like really and truly hate it. You can see how this sets the stage for preferring a studio to the outdoors.
I will say that studio lighting is much trickier for me to work with than natural light, always has been, even when I had my own studio lighting, I always set my backdrop near a window so I could utilize as much sunshine as possible.   So, as much as I have loved being warm and arriving as a reasonable time to take these pics, I am often not nearly as happy with the results as I am when in the great outdoors.
On this particular morning, we did both.  We had been out taking photos at sunrise and then drove to the studio where the owner said since we had the first appointment of the day, she would leave the key and we could go in as early as we liked and have access to all her props.  She's pretty wonderful like that.  So, we were able to get a ton of different outfits photographed in this space, but I really loved this backdrop and one other. So, preapre yourself to see them a lot!

Outfit Collection: Raileen by Stop Staring!

You know how it goes, you find a style you love and then you buy one in every color.  It may seem excessive to some, but if you've ever been the kind of person who has a really hard time finding clothes that fit them well, then you know the absolute joy of finding something that not only fits but makes you look and feel amazing.  And if you are this type of person then it only makes sense to get one in every color, in fact it would be downright foolish not to.
Such was the case when I came across this Raileene dress by Stop Staring!  I loved it so much that I bought one in every color and I've never looked back.  So, today's post is a tribute to all the Raileens in my life and how I have loved and styled them over the years.

Mean Business

That's right, I'm rocking my one and only power suit today because today we have some business to discuss.  It's the business of being honest and assertive.  It's the business of standing up for yourself instead of avoiding confrontation.  Let me tell you a little story:  An 80 year old widow is approached by a neighbor who is 20 years her junior and asks her to drive her to a doctor's appointment an hour away through rush hour traffic in the largest city in the state.  She doesn't want to be "mean" or a "bed person" so she agrees.  She dreads every moment until the day arrives.  She spends every second of it terrified, stressed, and hating this person who has asked for such a huge favor and has a record of being a mooch, and after the appointment, spends most of her time hiding from her neighbor lest she be asked for more such favors.  Why didn't she just say no?

It seems like I hear from women around me on a weekly basis about the ways in which they have over-committed themselves to projects and under-defended themselves against power plays and verbal attacks.  Oh, ladies, it's time to say no and mean business.  I've been in churches and communities where the pressure to serve is on so much so that they will completely exhaust any help they get.  I've worked jobs with co-workers and bosses who criticize and make hateful comments.  And rather than address the issues, I avoided them.  Actually I wasn't avoiding anything.  Instead I was prolonging the problem by not nipping it in the bud and it always grew until I hated the people involved, left the church or the job, and continued to ruminate about it for years.  Why put yourself through that?  Believe me when I say there is a much better way.  It won't be easy at first, but you can do it.
Many, but not all, of the women I speak with who struggle with these issues are Christians.  For the Christian women they feel as though they have sinned, or at least fallen short when they refuse to give their time to a project or serve in some way.  For the non-Christian women I've spoken with they tend to be people pleasers and it's more about wanting others to like them and being afraid that if they say no they'll lose popularity or friendship.  It's much the same when these women are verbally insulted or attacked by another and decide to stay silent rather than confront the person or situation.  One such person I spoke with most recently was asked to drive a neighbor to a doctor's appointment.  This dear woman is nearing 80, having to drive the younger woman very large cities filled with dizzying traffic to get to this appointment when they both live within 5 minutes of a doctor in their quiet little town.  The octogenarian agreed to this rather than offend her neighbor and the drive was so stressful and the other woman so cloying that by the end of it she hated her.  I advised her to firmly state that she would under no circumstances ever drive her anywhere again as she was not comfortable driving any more and then tactfully suggest that the woman switch to the local doctor.  From what I hear, it has worked although they are no longer "friends."

To the Christian women who struggle with this I would say this:  God Loves a Cheerful Giver (2 Corinthians 9:7).  That doesn't just mean he wants you to joyfully give in the offering plate, but also with your time and let's face it, if you say yes to things which you really don't have the energy or time for and then grumble about it, dread it, wish it was over, and avoid the people who might ask you to help again, you're the opposite of a cheerful giver.  And, if you put on a smile and pretend to be cheerful while inwardly you are filled with anger and resentment what you're doing is called lying.  You remember that lying is on God's Top Ten worst sins, right?  So, put your big girl pants on and say, "Thank you so much for thinking of me for this project/opportunity to serve.  I am just not able to commit the time to it right now, but I will pray that God leads you to the right person to help you with this."  And then mean it and stand your ground because Christian people know how to lay the guilt on in a very godly-sounding way but it's all manipulation.

For non-Christian women, the approach is basically the same but if you're agreeing to things simply because you're afraid of losing friends, you need to understand that a true friend may be disappointed that you can't help, but won't stop being your friend.   By contrast, a person who rejects you because you are already over booked with your time is just using you.  They're not your friend and you shouldn't be sad to get them out of your life if that's all it takes.  When it comes to verbal abuse, the sooner you talk about it the better.  A few years ago I had a confrontation with a co-worker who liked to say horrible things to everyone under the guise that she was "joking."  She said a few things to me which caught me off guard and made me so miserable I thought about quitting.  Finally I decided I'd had enough and was ready for the next attack.  It came and she made a very harsh comment about me.  I calmed myself for a bit and an hour later I walked up to her and said, "I need to talk to you about something.  Earlier when you said_______, what did you mean by that?"  The person tried to dismiss it, but I knew I had been insulted so I persisted with, "Well, it was extremely rude and unprofessional."  The person apologized and treated me with more respect for a time but as happens with some people after a few months she began testing the boundaries again.  I had to call her out several times before she got the message that she could not speak to me that way.
So many people are afraid of what others think of them and they walk on eggshells trying to avoid hurting anyone or making anyone angry, but what you have in the end is a bitter, resentful person who spends more time avoiding conflict than it would take to just deal with it and be done.  Telling others no, doesn't make you a bad person.  Nor does it make you a monster to stand-up for yourself when others are out of line.  On the contrary, you're being honest and brave, and that's something that God approves of and so will the people who truly love you and truly are your friends.  Have the courage to be honest.  You won't be sorry for living an authentic life.  So, stand up for yourself.  Say no when you need to and mean business.

Power Suits

Stop Staring Unique Vintage Leonora Navy Polka Dot Suit Dress
When we hear the words "power suit" it conjures images of wall street tycoons yelling into the latest model cell phone about stock prices.  But, I would venture to say that a power suit can and should be in so many more of our wardrobes regardless of whether or not we deal in stocks.
Stop Staring Unique Vintage Leonora Navy Polka Dot Suit Dress
The term "power suit" arrived in the 1980s when Wall Street and yuppies seemed to feature in nearly every movie at the box office and through the magic of storytelling, the exact same type of slick-haired suit wearing businessman was either the hero or the villain depending on the view point.  Funny, but even when I knew they were supposed to be the hero, I still felt like they were all just bad men in nice suits.
Stop Staring Unique Vintage Leonora Navy Polka Dot Suit Dress
As far as women's fashion goes, I think the power suit has been around much longer.  Do a quick search of women's suits of the 1940s and you'll find some striking silhouettes.  While you likely won't find any of those suits in wearable condition, thankfully there are designers like Alicia Estrada of Stop Staring who keep those classic styles alive.
With just enough shoulder padding to frame up your form, a peplum style jacket, and this fitted skirt, Estrada's Leonora dress is a suit that makes one confident statement.  Notice the way that the navy blocks at the side of the jacket create a slimming effect.  And this fabric does a fabulous job of shaping and contouring.
The best news of all is that this style is typically available at Stop Staring for custom order meaning you can always get your size.  I decided to go up one size from my usual and it is the perfect fit.
Hello curves and hello confidence.  Which way to Wall Street?

Holly Jolly

How are you feeling about the holidays this year?  This time of year can be super stressful for many of us, add to that the bizarre year that it's been and I don't know exactly how to feel.  Am I stressed, fearful, depressed, thankful, totally over all of it?
Sometimes instead of letting our emotions rule us, telling us how to feel and react, we have to resort to a Joe Friday approach, "just the facts, ma'am."  Feelings are untrustworthy at best.  Focus on the facts or better yet, focus on the truth instead.  The truth never changes.
As far as stress goes, ask yourself what's got you stressed and how much of it is within your control?  Chances are you can manage a lot of that stress.  Freaking out over buying gifts for everyone?  Get some gift cards or bake some cookies and send them with a nice note on festive paper explaining that you're taking a bit of the pressure off yourself, but you love each person all the same.
Money got you worried?  Maybe you just be honest about your finances this year and say, "I just can't" to a lot of the sideline stuff so you won't go deeper into debt.  Depressed?  Get out there and serve others!  There's no better way to cure depression than by helping others instead of obsessing about your problems.
This next part is really going to offend people with delicate sensibilities, but I really don't care because it needs to be said.  As far as being afraid goes, Tell your fears to sack up or shut up.  Life is risk.  Every moment of everyday we're all taking our chances. There's never been a time in all of history that was without conflict, trials, dangers, and most of them were more difficult and life threatening than anything we face today.  Get out there and live!

And, if you can, go beyond just living and love your life.  Love the people in your life and make sure they know just how much they mean to you, right now and every chance you get.  Make this the best holiday season ever!

The Ava Dress

I thought we could use a little brilliance today, something bright and cheery-- and stunning couldn't hurt either--that's why I chose the Ava dress from Stop Staring! for today's post.
Stop Staring by Alicia Estrada Ava One Shoulder Dress
I've been eyeing this dress for a few weeks and decided that today was the day to style it.  I'm definitely aware of the fact that I'm filling out this dress in a different way than I would have in January.  Remember those quarantine pounds we discussed in an earlier post?
Well, in spite of the fact that I have been working out a few times a week and am making a more deliberate effort to get up from my work screen about every hour or so to walk around or squeeze in a 5-10 minute workout of some sort, the pounds have refused to budge.
Well, it took six months of quarantine to gain the weight; it is fair to assume it will take that long to lose them again.  So, I'll just stay the course with fitness and hope to gain a little muscle in the process.
In the meantime, why not make the best of what I have.  Or better yet totally own those curves!  If I haven't mentioned this before, Stop Staring! wiggle dresses are made of a fabric similar to Spanx, so they've got some really great shaping abilities to maximize your shape.
A Stop Staring! dress like this will have you saying, "What quarantine weight?"

Apple Anyone?

My outfit today is inspired by the queen in Snow White and I rather love it. Apple, anyone? I always related to the queen more than Snow White anyway. Was she misguided in her vanity and anger? Absolutely, but maybe she was misunderstood too. How does the world perceive you? Are you generally liked? Are you hated like the wicked queen in a fairytale. Or do people just avoid you because of your Resting B!#%h Face Syndrome? You may have an idea of what others think. You may have no idea at all. The question is, how far should you go to find out?

I just saw an ad today for this little gizmo that goes on your wrist and tracks your tone throughout the day. It tells you how you may be perceived by others and you can alter your tone and behavior to be more acceptable. Wow, did someone watch the Stepford Wives one too many times before heading to the office to pitch their latest tech idea? Is it just me or is this the worst idea ever!!

Let me put my tinfoil hat on for a second and just say, Doesn't this sound like social programming to you? Let's all be the same carbon copy mindless drones with our little wrist gadgets to keep us in line. NO THANKS! I happen to like all the different personalities that are out there and I've found that it's up to me to get to know people far more than it is up to them to alter themselves to get me to like them.

I like the wicked queens in my life as much as the lovely Snow Whites and the bumbling fairies, and chattering woodland friends and all the rest. We all have our role to play, our different points of view, and our flavor to add to life. And, I for one, wouldn't have it any other way. So, please, oh please, if you've seen this little gadget out there, don't buy it. Don't worry so much about what others think. Be the best You that you can be, but always be the real you.
