Lead the Way with Chillinen

Today's post features another lovely stand-out piece from Chillinen.  I absolutely adore their dresses and they've given my readers a promo code for $12 off your purchase with code BLEU.  Speaking of stand-out pieces, have you ever looked at your style and realized it's not really your style at all?  Everyone at work or in your social group is dressing the same way and you don't like it, because it doesn't feel like you.  So, you decide to be bold and wear something that's more like you and less like the crowd.  The first thing you should prepare yourself for is opposition.  Yeah, crowd-people don't like it when you do your own thing.  Get ready for some side glances and "what are you so dressed up for?"  Don't let this phase you, it will pass!  The next thing you're going to notice is like-minded individuals, who are also quietly unhappy with how they dress when they follow the crowd but aren't going to stick their necks out...until you do.  That's right, if you lead the way, others will follow.  They might copy you to some degree, hey, you like dresses?  I like dresses!  Or they might go in a completely different direction, but it's all thanks to your courage, because you were willing to go against the grain and lead the way.

The Perfect Summer Maxi Dress

Red Flower Printed Maxi Dress from ChicWish
I may have  mentioned it a time or two, but I feel like my style is changing.  This year I have noticed a real shift in the styles I find comfortable.  I've gone from whimsical prints to much more classical chic.  Everything has been cotton and longer, all of my skirts and dresses have gotten longer.

One thing I have learned from this style evolution is that long dresses can be kind of tricky.  Sometimes one's figure gets swallowed in all that extra fabric.  That's why it's important to choose a print that is bold but not overwhelming, and to be certain that the dress is fitted in all the right spots.

I love this EBULLIENT RED FLOWER PRINTED MAXI DRESS  from ChicWish because it checks all those style boxes.  The print is so bright and lovely, perfect for summer, but it is also light and airy and floats when I walk.

With two snaps on the bodice front and a smocked elastic waist, this dress creates a chic silhouette that fits my waist and bust and doesn't make me feel like I have disappeared in it.  Even though this dress has a summer vibe, I know it will look great with a nice chunky cardigan.  I know this because it's already styled and hanging up, ready to wear to work tomorrow.

Style, like everything else, is always changing.  ChicWish has made it ever so much easier to find comfortable, beautiful pieces for a polished look.

Toile Part 1: Zoo Land

1. What is Toile and 2. why do I care?  To answer your second question first, you may not care so keep reading to find out. As for the first question, I am so glad you asked. The word “toile,” pronounced twall, has several meanings because like many words that have been around for ages, the term has evolved over time. Toile simply means fabric in French and could refer to the type of cheap thin fabric that dressmakers used to create their prototypes before cutting up the good stuff. For the purposes of clothing and home décor today, however, toile refers to repeating pastoral prints in a 1700s style of illustration.  Before we can understand why this design element has stood the test of time, we must go back to its origins.

European cloth with printed designs was a thing of beauty and could be quite costly, there was just one problem, as of the 1600s, Europeans had not discovered a way to make the designs withstand washing. So fashionistas of the day had to choose between being dressed to the nines or having clean clothes. It was a tough call indeed. Then trade with India opened up. India not only had the perfect climate to grow an abundance of cotton for making fabric, but had also discovered a way to preserve printed designs through the use of metal and salt fixatives.

Suddenly you could have it all, clean clothes that were also beautiful and made of breathable fabric. The demand grew so much that certain Europe countries placed a ban on all imported cotton for fear that it would ruin their own fabric industries. Undeterred by the rule of law, black markets sprang up and people continued to buy this illegal ware even in the face of public attacks and humiliation. Several reports from the time indicate that women were attacked for wearing printed cottons and had their dresses torn from their bodies. And yet, the style persisted. That is a level of commitment, I'm not sure I could have to any clothing style or print.

Although we think of toile, that is to say cotton or canvas fabric with a pastoral print classically in red, blue, or black on a white or unbleached background, as a French creation, it actually began in Ireland in the 1700s and then spread in popularity to England, France, and the rest of Europe. One reason for this is that France lifted its ban on Indian fabric in 1759 during the reign of King Louis XV. Louis XV is well known for having one of the most lavish courts not just in France but in all of history. With the flood gates open on imported goods and the money flowing from the aristocracy to buy them, it wasn't long before textile manufacturers discovered the secrets to Indian printed fabrics and then began to improve upon them.
Jouy-en-Josas became the most prolific producer of toile fabric under the direction of German designer Christoph-Phillippe Oberkampf. Oberkampf discovered his own technique for creating colorfast prints, further refined the process by using engraved metal plates for his prints which could achieve far finer details than the previous wood block method. Embraced by the French court and the likes of Marie-Antoinette who although Austrian born and French executed, set the standard for much of what is considered to be classical French culture even today. More on that in another post. As the designs grew in popularity, the use of this style as a method of storytelling also emerged. Today what we see in toile prints can be anything from the classical pastoral scenes to more modern whimsical designs such as this Zoo Land print from ChicWish.
Now, if you have read this far and decided that you really don't care about Toile or learning anymore, then you may want to skip the next two posts because this print set up permanent residence in my heart many years ago and I am delighted to share not only my latest acquisitions in toile, but also the history behind it. So, toile has found a place in your heart too, join me here again for parts 2 and 3 in this series.

Beach Memories

In honor of our snowfall this week, I thought I'd take a look back at warmer days.  Memories of this wonderful trip last year that was just Mr. Bleu and myself.  The children had other things going on and couldn't come with us, but we had the perfect time just the two of us.  When I say the "perfect" time I mean that we did exactly what I always wanted to do on a beach vacation--nothing.
It seems like there is always a daunting pressure to Do Things while on vacation.  Sight-seeing, amusement parks, tours, dinner, dancing, and the likes are all very nice but not very relaxing for an introvert such as myself so I don't consider them to be much of a vacation.  I've always just wanted to spend my entire vacation laying on the beach, reading, eating, swimming, napping, but mostly just napping, and on this particular trip that's all we did.
We got to the beach early each morning before anyone else was there, set up our little tent and then took a nice long walk with the whole oceanside to ourselves each day.  Then we crawled in our tent and relaxed while the days slipped by with no schedule and no pressure and I hope we get to do it again this year.

Just for Fun

I realized today that I haven't read anything from one of my favorite bloggers in a while, so I headed over to check out her latest post, only to see that her latest post was November of 2019.  As much as I hate to say it, I'm afraid another of my favorite blogs has shuttered its doors.  Maybe temporarily, maybe for good.  Either way, I'm sad to see it go, but this is the nice thing about blogging--you can come and go as you please.
A few months ago I had a brand decide to end our collaborations because I am a blogger.  They wanted me to have my own domain name and website, but that, my dear friends, costs money.  If it's going to cost money then it should make money to pay for itself, right?  And if it has to make money, then the pressure is on.  And if the pressure is on then blogging stops being fun and becomes work.
I believe in balance to all things.  A little work; A little fun.  Too much of either leads to dissatisfaction.  I have a job and a family, and a farm, and quite frankly, I don't need anymore work.  I just want a nice little space to relax and have fun.  That's what my blog is and that's how I want it to stay.
And maybe my fellow blogger did too.  Maybe she just got too bogged down with other things--we all remember how crazy last year was--and decided to put blogging on hold for a while.  I hope she'll be back one day, but if she doesn't come back, I understand and I wish her well.

I also want to take just a moment to thank all the wonderful brands who accept me as I am and want to work with me.  It's been such a wonderful experience working with so many great companies, and being able to show you some great styles at great prices.
It sort of sounds like I'm saying goodbye and this is my farewell speech, but nothing could be further from the truth.  I'm just pausing in my hectic schedule to be thankful for this space, and everything about  blogging.  It has been more than just an amusement; it's been therapeutic.  And thank you, dear reader, for accepting me as I am.  Thanks for listening and thanks for sharing.

A Thousand New Year Rhymes

The Year by Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Blogger Review GLORY OF LOVE STAR PRINTED MAXI DRESS IN NAVY from ChicWish
What can be said in New Year rhymes,
That’s not been said a thousand times?
The new years come, the old years go,
We know we dream, we dream we know.
We rise up laughing with the light,
We lie down weeping with the night.
GLORY OF LOVE STAR PRINTED MAXI DRESS IN NAVY from ChicWish
We hug the world until it stings,
We curse it then and sigh for wings.
We live, we love, we woo, we wed,
We wreathe our brides, we sheet our dead.
We laugh, we weep, we hope, we fear,
And that’s the burden of the year.

Snow Angel

Lollie Lace Floor Length Dress Review Awesome Jade
The first real snow of winter has come and quite early this year too!  And not a moment too soon, because I just received this stunning Lollie Lace Floor Length Gown for a collaboration with Awesome Jade and was looking for the perfect place to photograph it when lo and behold, my very own farm was turned into the perfect winter wonderland overnight!
Lollie Lace Floor Length Maxi Corset Dress from Awesome Jade
I can count up on one hand the number of times we had a white Christmas when I was growing up here.  Although it didn't happen often it was always epic.  Not to be content with just a light dusting or even a couple of inches, we had a foot/30cm of snow and ice or nothing at all.
Lollie Lace Floor Length Maxi Dress from Awesome Jade Review Blogger
This is our fourth Christmas back in this part of the world and we've seen not a single flake before late January in all those years until today.  Now, true to form, it's been a regular deluge, and every tree and mountaintop as far as I can see is thickly blanketed in soft powdery snow.
When the snow does come, it is an absolute necessity to make time to enjoy it.  And here I am, snowed in with a stunningly beautiful white lace dress, just wandering in my own winter wonderland like a snow angel.  All that's missing is my wings.
Where has this beautiful Lollie Lace Floor Length dress been all my life?!  With all this delicate white lace, I really did feel just like a snow angel.  I love the versatility of this dress.  It has elements of both Boho and classical design, so that you can style it lots of ways depending on your personality or just how you're feeling on a particular day.
This Lollie dress has a nude lining with a delicate white lace overlay and an almost corset like bodice with a fitted waist.  The delicate straps are made of a stretchy elastic, and the bodice has soft bustier cups, so it wears well with a strapless bra or without a bra for a more natural boho look.
A dress this stunning calls for a little vintage elegance.  One look at my hairstyle and my heels, if you could see them around the snow, and you know that I lean more toward classical and vintage styles, but I can just as easily picture this dress with a felt hat, a loose cardigan and some leather ankle boots.
This is my second collaboration with Awesome Jade (you can see the first here) and I have been so pleased with their dresses.  Everything is so delicate and graceful with lots of feminine details of embroidery and lace.
I'll make it my Christmas wish that there are many more lovely snow days on the way and many more collaborations in gorgeous dresses from Awesome Jade.
