Christmas Time is Here

Wood Sleds, Silver Truck, Cork Trees, Shell Trees, Ceramic Trees from Etsy.com
I always do most of my sewing in the winter.  Usually January through March is a mad flurry of patterns, fabric, and bits of thread everywhere.  Then, when winter turns to spring, my thoughts and attention turn to life outdoors:  the garden, bike rides, vacation, swimming.  All my fabric gets put away for another year.  December falls into the no man's land of after the activities but before the sewing.  As a result, I've never made a Christmas dress.  Last January, I saw this holiday fabric on sale, so I made the dress then and put it away until December.  I'm surprised at how much patience I've developed over the years...which sounds like a brag, but it isn't, I promise.
The print is simple, just holiday houses, but I loved the colors and the little town going about its merry way.  I added a red sash from another dress, but I sort of wish I had more things in green as I think that would really make the red and gold colors pop.  I never know how the holidays will go.
What I do know is that at this age they're rarely magical.  Instead they're lots of work and lots of stress.  But it's important to keep traditions and make time for the people we love, and little things like setting a beautiful table, letting the children decorate the tree however they wish and then not changing it, and seeing mom (me) in a beautiful dress she made herself--this is the way I create a magical memories for my children in the hopes that they will look back with wonder and smile.

  1. Wise words and a very sweet whimsical Christmas dress! Hope your Christmas is wonderful with your family, and all the best for 2020!

I can't believe 2020 is here, sometimes I find myself shocked it got here so quickly, and super nostalgic for the first half of the decade - but it's the beginning of a new one and full of potential and challenge. (I'm in my 40s with two almost teens, and yes, they decorated the tree.)

My mother took me travelling sometimes in my teens and we always put up the tree together - those are some of my favourite memories, and weirdly now that I'm older I keep remembering little details that I didn't think about much before.

Sorry for the long comment! Virtual hugs and best of the silly season!
