Strawberry Girl Sewing Project

An imaginary conversation between Samwise Gamgee of Lord of the Rings and Mark Blackthorne of Lady Midnight.

"It'll be spring soon. And the orchards will be in blossom.  And the birds will be nesting in the hazel thicket.
And they'll be sowing the summer barley in the lower fields...and eating the first of the strawberries with cream.
Do you remember the taste of strawberries?” asked Sam
“It has been many years since I have eaten freely at my choice, fair one, and a plate of strawberries is all that I desire." said Blackthorn.

Ok, silly conversation mash-up aside, I had this whole outfit planned out when I ordered the new pattern to try out and the fabric for this dress back in late January.  I also ordered this adorable novelty crossbody bag that looked like a jar of jam and matched the colors in this dress.
So, I set to work on the dress and then Covid hit and shut down the world.  So, the bag never arrived even though I tried to buy it three times from three different sellers.  I made the dress anyway and thought I would wear it for berry picking.  To my dismay, all the berry crops were hit by a late frost and are practically non existent this year.  It all leads me to believe that the entire world is just having a rough year.
That's ok, we'll get through this and there will be other springs.  Nothing in my current pattern collection was quite like a sundress, so I went in search of something new.  This dress is the product of my first attempt at this Simplicity 1950s reproduction  8252 pattern and it proved to very easy.  I was nervous about the pleating at the bust, but it was simple and straightforward and I did it correctly on my very first try.  I was so encouraged by my success that I made a second dress and felt confident to make a few changes to the design.
I am very glad that I got out and took a few spring pics in this dress instead of waiting for a berry crop that would never come and I know this dress is going to be great as a cool summer sundress this year.  A post about my second attempt is coming soon.
