'Tis the Pumpkin Season

Yes, that's right, tis the season to don costumes, carve pumpkins, put spices in everything, and generally revel in the autumn of it all.
I'm ready; I'm ready for all of it!  The one exception being that I still don't have any idea what I'm going to do for my Halloween costume, but I suppose the idea will just have to come to me when it comes to me.  There's no time like the very last minute.
I'm so glad that Unique Vintage brought back this Halloween themed Fair Isles sweater this year because I love, love, love it.  It goes perfectly with my Rust Tights from We Love Colors.
If I must say goodbye to summer again, at least I can celebrate its passing in style.  Get ready for a whole month of spooky sweaters and every shade of orange in existence.

Puppies Are Forever

With a mere week to go before Christmas, I wasn't looking for anymore gifts.  Everything I intended to give was already bought or made, neatly wrapped and lying under my tree.  Sometimes the very best gifts are the ones we're not expecting.
We were on our way home at the end of a long day, and just needed to stop at the local grocery store to refuel the car.  I wasn't even planning on getting out.  As I sat staring, making a mental list of everything left to do that evening, my eyes landed on some movement in the back of a truck.
There sat a little white-haired woman, with two adorable puppies.  "Puppies!" I cried.  "Can we go look?" my youngest asked, but I was already unbuckling my seat belt and opening my door.  She followed suit.  In a few short seconds we were each holding a sweet, soft, wiggly puppy and of course we couldn't agree on which one to take, so we took both and drove home listening to Sia's Christmas album, specifically Puppies Are Forever, and indeed they are.
I'm glad we took both puppies.  They're sisters after all, even though they don't look it, and sisters shouldn't be separated.  We arrived just in time too, because as soon as we agreed to take them, two more people showed up, each wanting one.  "Sorry," the lady said, "they've just been adopted."  The would-be pet adopters walked away saying something along the lines of what a great gift a puppy would have been, and while I had a moment's hesitation, thinking maybe we should give them up to these other people, in the end I couldn't part with them.
Lizzie and Lulu have been a wonderful addition to our family.  Lizzie (short hair/stoic) is quiet and reserved; Lulu (fluffy bum/wiggle pup) is rambunctious and full of fun.  I don't know if puppies are a great Christmas gift unless you enjoy taking them for walks when it's below freezing or losing sleep on your winter break because they're chewing everything up and scratching at the door, but they are a wonderful gift.  Even though they take a lot of work, they've also brought so much joy to our home and our lives.
Yesterday we were all bundled up by the fireplace watching it sleet and snow.  This morning we woke up to a winter wonderland and in honor of the puppies first snow, I thought I'd take them out for a little romp through the winter wonderland and try to get a few pics before they're grown.
Lizzie doesn't like to be picked up.  Period.  It makes her feel scared.  Even if we're sitting on the floor. But she also doesn't like to be left out.  Instead, she wants you to sit down and let her climb into your lap while leaving two feet on the floor.  After which she promptly falls asleep.
I like to hold Lulu because she grunts and "talks" the whole time and if I hold her close she tries her best to cover me in puppy kisses.  I only just managed to get this one photo of her looking at the camera instead of trying to lick me.  These darling girls have been such a joy.  More pics to come.

The Fair Isles Sweater Club

I'm not sure why this style of sweater has captured my heart so, but it has and it really didn't take that long.  Sure, I grew up in the 80s and my delightfully stereotypical prissy cousin wore nothing but those bulky Benetton cable knits, usually with a turtle neck underneath, slouchy socks and a perm.  And in my mind she never wore anything else...was it always winter in the 80s or was she just atypically cold.  Anyway.  Sweaters weren't my thing.  Until there were.  Which is now.  I love them now.  I have more cardigans than I care to admit or even count and my Fair Isles collection is growing with each passing winter.  They're so lovely, so cozy, so cheery in the bleakness of winter.  So, if you're a fellow lover of Fair Isles, I propose we start a club.  There must be others like-minded out there in the great big internet.

Those Fair Isles

Once in my youth, I traveled to England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.  Those lovely British Isles will always have a special place in my heart and I hope to be able to go back there someday to see them all again only this time I want to take my girls with me.  They haven't quite got the travel bug like their dear ol' mum, but maybe that will change with time.

Fair Isle for Dreary Days: ootd

I have a newfound weakness for ugly sweaters, because they present me with an interesting challenge.  And I am a bit of a challenge enthusiast.  When something comes to my door with a gorgeous print and the most flattering cut, all I have to do is put it on.  But, an ugly sweater, like a buried treasure asks me to keep digging.  It tests my skill and and imagination to unlock its potential and perhaps even make it an enviable gem of my wardrobe.
A few months ago I posted about my first ugly sweater purchase, a Fair Isle pullover by Forever21, and I was instantly hooked.  So, here is my second ugly sweater endeavor, a Fair Isle cardigan by J.Crew.  I purchased this button down from ThredUp for $15 so my investment risk was minimal.  (ThredUp is my favorite online Thrift store.  If you've never checked it out, use this link to sign up and save $20 off your first order http://www.thredup.com/r/WKVOY5 )
I loved the pink, ivory colors, but wasn't so sure I liked the orange in the mix, so I wanted to focus mostly on those pastels with the pink rose earrings, pink purse, and ivory tights.  The dark orange corduroy Banana Republic skirt came from ThredUp on the same visit and was only $11.  You can see why I love ThredUp!  The darker color of the skirt helps to tone down that bright orange in the collar and bodice.  The booties just seemed the right way to finish this modest and girly outfit and at the end of it all, I love this sweater, because with the right influences around it, it is actually quite beautiful.
Do you have an ugly sweater that you love?  Send me pics of the way you love to wear it best and I may use them in a future post!
