A new year dawns today. There's a reason I don't ring in the new year with anything more than a single glass of champagne--I want to be fully aware, fully in the moment, rather than having my head fully in a toilet and my heart full of regrets. This is a day to set aside the past a look ahead, reevaluate the way things have been going, make some changes if necessary, and more than anything start to hope.
Hope. It's a dangerous word. So much depends on it and when it is lost...we are lost. When the struggles of the world and the suffering that defines human existence rear their ugly heads far too often, hope can start to slip away and we wonder, what is all of this for? Where is the meaning to it all? The answer to that question is impossibly hard to find and yet when we do it often turns out to be the simplest thing and right under our noses.
I've had my days and sometimes my years where I don't have the energy to look beyond "today," but hope always returns and with it comes the desire to see things change and make things better in some way, and reach for the starts once again.
