There are two kinds of people in this world--Star Trek people and Star Wars people. Back in my post highschool/pre-grown-up days I had two close friends. One was a die hard Star Trek fan and the other was a die hard Star Wars fan. But, interestingly enough neither of them were Die Hard fans. They were always arguing about those shows in a mostly friendly way, but when they came to an impasse they turned to me to settle the fight.
I used to love both--not equally, I always leaned more towards Star Wars. Now I find myself leaning more toward Star Trek because I can't deny that after over 50 years and umpteen spin off shows Star Trek has some serious staying power.
Star Wars on the other hand seems to have peaked in 1983 with Return of the Jedi and like a medieval leper has been limping along, gradually dropping the parts we loved (like relatable, organic characters who experience personal growth! Also, bring back the puppets!) until it's hardly recognizable. Rogue One is the exception to that and Mandelorian had a brilliant first season and shows real promise. (Did you know that George Lucas just doesn't go on the internet now, because he can't handle all the hate? Well, anyway, that's what I heard.)
These may sound like some pretty impassioned opinions, but they're not. I stopped being a big fan of pretty much anything film or television a long time ago. I just got so tired of being disappointed when the writers started phoning it in or sacrificing story in order to cheaply preach a message, or networks that canceled a brilliant show before it could even get going---I'm talking to you Fox and I'm talking about Firefly. Now, I have learned to enjoy those things for a season or two and jump ship when they start to tank. I stopped after season 5 of Game of Thrones (he hadn't finished the books, so some screen writers were just winging it) and The Walking Dead (how many times can you watch these people wander into an untouched area, somehow get it completely overrun with zombies ruining everything and then take off again?).
These days, if I need a good Sci-Fi fix, and let's face it, every now and then I really, really do, I mainly stick to the classics by Bradbury, Asimov, Huxley, and the like. There's such an elegance to that style of Sci-fi and I find more and more that the things I first read about 20 years ago and some of which were written about over 75 years ago are coming into existence. I can't tell if those writers were prophetic or if they simply inspired today's inventions, but whatever the case it's interesting to be living in a time with houses that are alive or to have a wrist computer and video phones. Have I taken enough space with this post talking about movies and television? Shall we move on to the fashion elements? Onward then.
In my own little creative sphere the gears have been grinding and I have decided to do a few more sci-fi themed outfits with that lovely Space Cadet print from RockSteady and perhaps another outfit with that lovely Space Pinup dress from Collectif. So, in addition to this dress in red, I also bought the skirt and the dress in mint green. Love, love, love them all! Although that green dress was "a real booger to track down" as my southern relatives would say, and I have a new rocket ship novelty bag to match which is taking its sweet time in clearing customs, but more on that when I do that dress post.
Although I love this look, I think it's quite a different vibe and generally just a little more casual than my post with the dress of the same print. And it could be even more casual by pairing it with flats and a cropped cardi, which is probably how I will style this skirt the most often when I wear it. There's something about that dress though that is so unique; it really makes a statement. Be on the look out for more sci-fi outfits to come!
