Yes, It's Ok to Show Your Bra

Black PU Cupped Corset Bodycon Mini Dress - Verona from FemmeLuxeFinery.co.uk
It's FemmeLuxe week and I'm excited to kick things off with something experimental.  I love FemmeLuxe's T-Shirts, Joggers, and Loungewear, and they've been so incredibly comfortable for my work at home days, but their dresses are to die for.  I absolutely love the way their bodycon dresses make my figure look.  If you love FemmeLuxe as much as I do, and let's face it if you've ever tried their dresses then you do, then this week is for you.  If you're never tried one of FemmeLuxe's bodycon dresses or corset dresses, you won't regret it.  So, for this first post, we're using this stunning Black PU Cupped Corset Bodycon Mini Dress - Verona from FemmeLuxe and we're going to address a couple of very common issues that we all deal with when wearing strapless dresses and a simple work around.

Probably the biggest fashion faux pas of the past 70 years has been the visible bra strap!  I remember being a young woman and having absolutely no options when it came to bras.  Something that matched my skin color was unheard of.  There was black or white or some kind of cutesy print.   As a result, I never wore white shirts because of the dreaded visibility of white on white.  And of course, wearing boat necks and racerbacks was out because the bra straps would show and that was mortifying to every girl and woman alike.

Suddenly the struggle to hide your bra straps began to change.  Almost overnight there were racerbacks, t-shirt bras, converitible bras and the pinnacle of all bra-chievements, the Sports Bra.  Yes, I am old enough to remember when no one had heard of sports bras and having to play basketball without one for a year or two before they made it into the mass market.  In the last decade or so I've noticed that bras have become decidedly---fancier?

It might sound puritanical to say now, but modesty matters and nice girls didn't show their bras on purpose back then.  These days classy girls know how to do it with such style it doesn't seem like you're showing your bra at all.   When I first began to see these so called "fancy" bras, I immediately began to suspect that they were meant to be seen-- some of them had necks for crying out loud.  What a brilliant idea!  Stop struggling to hide your bra and find one that's meant to show in a very tasteful way of course.

The first time I tried this was with a racerback top.  It had very thing straps and there was just no way to not show bra straps, so I chose a bra with very wide lacy straps that would show under the shirt straps in a pretty way.  You can see that post here.  Admittedly, it did feel sort of strange at first, but when I looked at the photos, I really loved the look.  I showed the pics before posting to the blog to some of my more modest friends and they loved it too.  I let them have an initial response and then told them that the lace was bra straps and they said it still looked great.  I figured if they felt the same as I did, then I must be on to something.

I think we can all agree that the toughest thing about wearing a strapless dress is finding the right bra.  Strapless bras are pretty notorious for slouching on the job and creating an altogether unflattering view.  Well, rather than giving up on your favorite strapless dresses, maybe the best solution is to side step straplessness altogether.  To demonstrate this, I'm wearing the Black PU Cupped Corset Bodycon Mini Dress - Verona from FemmeLuxe.

The great thing about this dress is that it already  has structured cups with some built in support.  And if I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times, look for dresses just like this that do the work for you and don't force your figure to do all the work to make you look great.  But, if you happen to need a little more lift or support and straplessness is just too much hassle, look for a bra that is meant to show.

For this post, I chose this Victoria's Secret Angels High Neck bra.  Ok, if a bra goes all the way up to your neck, it's going to show.  The Verona dress is a corset dress and for most of us when we hear corset we think Victorian.  So, why not explore that element by combining some other Victorian attributes like lace and a high neckline. I thought this VS bra with the high neck and the beige lace would give that extra Victorian emphasis.  For accessories I kept it simply with black earrings and a ring--no necklace necessary--and I opted for metallic snake print heels instead of combining the PU of the dress with shiny patent heels.  Volia!  Outfit complete and one of life's great fashion struggles avoided.  Tomorrow's post involves another must-seeLBD from FemmeLuxe!
