I Love Colors

If you were to ever meet my parents one day and if my mother took a particular liking to you and decided to show you photos from my teens and early 20s, you would probably rub your eyes in disbelief, grab the photo from my mom's hands and insist that this couldn't be Leandra!  This drab creature wearing all black or occasionally very, very dark gray, must be a fey changeling, because, good gracious, where are all the colors?!  It's at this point that I would walk in and ask who you are and why you're at my parents' house.  After a some explanation as to your identity and my 180° spin-about on wearing colors followed by a hearty laugh we would walk away friends.
I adore colors (now) and mixing as many colors onto one outfit palette as possible is my jam, but it wasn't always so.  My reasons for avoiding color included a hefty dose of teenage angst, a fear of standing out, and a dash of ignorance about how to wear/mix colors in general.  If any of that sounds familiar to you, let me encourage you that the angst will fade with the teen years and once you learn a little about what looks good on you and what colors work well together, the fear of standing out will dissipate too.
The easiest place to start is with a print that you love.  Starting with a print is the easiest because all the color mixing is already done for you.  All you have to do is choose 1-3 colors from the print that you want to wear with your print.  For this lights skirt that I bring out each year around the holidays,(see previous outfits here and here) I have lots of options on colors and try to do something different with it every year.  In the past I've done oragne, red, and blue.  This year I chose a bronze crop pullover from MAK and some Hunter green tights from WeLoveColors and I absolutely love the look.
If you're not ready for something quite this colorful, start with a basic plaid or floral print and then just add one to two colors from the print itself.  Accessorizing with one or two colors from the print will have different outcomes your outfit and you should be able to get lots of unique looks.
After you start feeling comfortable working with colors (and also getting compliments on how great you look!)  branch out to more bold prints and adding more colors to your wardrobe.  Tights and tops are a great way to accessorize and play with colors too, that's why I love WeLoveColors for all their amazing colorful tights and YeMAK has pullovers and cardis in every hue.  Life's too short to wear black all the time.  Live life in color!

The Back-from-Vacation-Blues

Mr. Bleu and I had an absolutely lovelier than usual weekend retreat this year.  The weather was not too hot or too cold, and not a cloud in the sky except for the perfect rainy slow drive home.  We explored places we never get to go, had fabulous meals including a chocolate ganache cheesecake which I didn't share and don't regret.
We took long walks hand-in-hand and had long quiet talks on the veranda of our hotel room as we ate dinner or watched the evening roll across the hills.  One evening, I went to bed at 8:00 p.m. and slept nine blissful hours, just because I could and I wanted to.  It was everything I want my vacations to be.
Reality hit with the phone call from home as were driving back.  All the cares, all the worries, all the problems, still waiting on us and slightly more urgent than before because we'd chosen to ignore them for a few days.  I'm not ashamed to say that setting foot in a house that was dirtier than before I left, and chores that were piling up, I immediately felt downhearted, asking myself, What's the point of going away if there's even more stress waiting on me when I get back?
The point, of course, is that there will always be stressors, always be work and toil and problems.  And every now and then they can just bloody wait.  Relaxation is critical so that we can continue to approach the problems life guarantees us with fresh energy and calmed perspective.
I took an extra day of vacation on the day following our return.  I initially intended to use this day to clean the house, take care of the chores, etc.  But, as I looked around at all the messes, it occurred to me that they would still be there tomorrow and perhaps what I needed most was a hot cup of tea, a chat with a good friend, and a midday nap.  So, that's what I did.

Oh, yes, I managed to knock-out a few things on that ever-present to-do list, like vacuuming, making beds, and dehydrating some of the apple slices to keep us snacking all throughout the winter.  But everything else?  It will all be there on my next day off, so why rush?
Perhaps the very best souvenir I can bring back with me from vacation is the intention to live a little slower for a while, to keep in mind that things have to be done, but not all at once, and not all today.  I can afford to spread them out so that my days are a pleasant mix of work and relaxation, of purpose and repose.
Life is nothing if not a balancing act after all.  As much as we always wish we could stay on vacation forever, and as sad as I sometimes am to return to the chore of living and working, I recognize that we need our times of rest just as much as we need our work.  too much rest and I would lose my direction in life; too much work and I would lose my joy.  So, I accept the work that will be waiting on me as part for the course, and carry on, finding ways to enjoy each day and feel refreshed as often as possible until I'm able to "get away from it all" again.

Shopping Addiction & the Road to Recovery: Step One

Recently I wrote a post about a little spending relapse in my road to freedom from shopping addiction.  The post, to my surprise, received quite a few views.  To me that means that this is a topic with which many people struggle and want help.  But, help with this issue is scarce, so it's something that I'm going to begin talking about regularly.  Personally I've felt very alone with this undertaking and have had to muddle through it while people in my life turned a blind eye or called me selfish instead of reaching out to help.  Let's face it, helping others is hard and most people, even people we love, just can't be bothered.  So, it's been a long, difficult, painful and solitary struggle, but I finally feel like I'm beginning to see the end of this road in sight and I want to help others by sharing what I've learned through it all.
I recommend if you are ready to deal with a hurt, habit, or hang-up of any kind that the very best kind of help you can get is face-to-face with either a support group or a therapist.  Once you admit that you need help and take that step, you will find that most addiction recovery programs follow the 12 Step model.  You can do the 12 steps on your own, but accountability is a critical part of recovery and you can't get that by yourself, so please if at all possible, the best place to start is side by side with others who can help you carry your burden.
The first step of the 12 Step program is Admitting That You Are Powerless Over Your Addiction.  For most people, it's easy to believe that they are handling their habit quite well, in spite of paramount evidence to the contrary, right up until they hit rock bottom.  For a shopping addict hitting rock bottom might be when the credit card bills arrive, the utilities get turned off because you've spent your money shopping and now have none left for bills, or when you kids get ready to go to college and find out you've spent their college fund.
For most people the way that they continue in their addiction is by not looking at it.  They don't check the accounts, sit down and add up the bills, or keep a count of how many times they've been to the shops this week alone.  And there are often layers of little justifications (mental bargaining to make the expense seem ok) like fully intending to pay it back with the next paycheck, but they never can and until finally the truth is out.  Rock bottom is one of those places that everyone who loves us tries to keep us away from.  Unfortunately, for most people that's the only place they'll begin to seek help.
If you're struggling with shopping addiction might I suggest that you first get honest with yourself about your spending by keeping a very detailed spending journal for at least one month.  Don't tally, just spend as usual and write everything down.  Then, at the end of the month add up every single penny you have spent.  You may find yourself at rock bottom when you look at those numbers and multiply them by 12 months, adding in a little extra for the holidays.  It can be quite a shock but one that you must own as part of step one, admitting that you are out of control and your addiction has been controlling you.
Once you've kept a journal for at least a month, it's time to analyze times/days when you are more prone to spending so you can begin to see what triggers you and create a plan to deal with those things in healthy ways.  For example, let's say that you notice that you tend to spend money at a particular shop that's on your way home from work.  The easiest way to avoid that temptation is to change your route going home.  Or perhaps you notice that certain times of the month or certain events like the big weekly business meeting trigger you to spend to alleviate stress.  To combat this you could schedule exercise directly after the big meeting so you can clear your head with physical activity instead of spending.
Continue keeping your journal and as you notice a pattern and create your strategy for success, it's time to set a spending limit.  Be reasonable!  No one is going to go from spending $5000 per month to $50.  You might be able to do that for a while, but what's more likely is that just like with highly restrictive dieting, you'll starve yourself for awhile only to binge big time and maybe even end up spending more than before.  So, let's say you spend $5000 on shopping each month.  For next month, limit yourself to $4,500.  That's a small decrease and very doable.  Then, after a month or two, drop yourself down to $4,000 and so on until you reach a level that is prudent and feasible.
Expect that at some point you will have a relapse.  Make a plan for what you will do if you get off track to help ease you back on again and most importantly get someone in your life to whom you can be accountable.  (That's technically step 5 in the program, but it really helps if you can get that person right from the start)  Since this is a topic that I struggled with alone for so long and since it was such a popular post when I last talked about it, I'm going to keep writing about it.  As a matter of fact, let's talk about and work through the 12 Steps together, and if at any point along the way you feel like reaching out to talk and have an accountability partner, just use the "contact me" button and I'd be more than happy to do that for you.

Happy Boo Year

Ghost Sweater ModCloth Shopping Aliexpress Blogger Review
Happy Boo Year!  Yes, it may be a reach, but I found a way to wear both of my Halloween sweaters well after their holiday appeal.  This was the second post planned for the ghostly sweaters that took three months to arrive and so they are far from relevant to any holidays including New Year's at the present time, but I'm making it work!  I waited three months for crying out loud, so it's happening.  You will also likely see both of these sweaters turn up again at Halloween but after waiting so long, I have no intention of waiting another ten months before these sweaters make their debut.

On the subject of getting spooked, my youngest daughter has been asking for my help lately.  She wants to enter a photography contest at her school and asked me to teach her what I know about photography.  I've assisted her in setting up a couple of photo shoots of our opossum and a still life scene or two, but I also thought it would be nice if she could work with me since I often need someone behind the camera, pushing the button for me.
This little graveyard is on the way to school, so I knew if we left early we wouldn't be late.  We arrived with plenty of time to take photos.  And yet, as soon as we pulled up, she seemed antsy.  I caught her looking over her shoulder more than once.
Every time a car approached she jumped and then panicked.  I knew she wasn't worried about ghosts, so I assumed she was worried about "getting in trouble for being in the cemetery.  When she grabbed the tripod and tried to dart to the wall to hide, I was getting a little frustrated I said, "Sweet heart, this is public land and we have a right to be here.  No one is going to yell at us."

"Ugh!  I know," she said and rolled her eyes.  "Ok, then," I said, "focus please.  Literally, focus.  The last half dozen shots were blurry because you were looking over your shoulder."  We got a few nice shots before we heard the sound of another car and her eyes darted toward the road.  "Oh, no!  That's my friend!  She's going to see me!"
Ah ha, so that's what had my baby girl spooked.  Not spooks and specters, not even belligerent grounds keepers or random passersby.  Dear old mum might embarrass her.  Really?  Me?  Surely she must be mistaken.  Would I do something that would embarrass my sweet youngest child?
Yeah, that does sound like me.  I tried for so long not to embarrass the people I love.  I tried so hard and was so successful at it that I became invisible.  I became someone I didn't recognize and quite frankly didn't like.  I was this blank person who never spoke and had no opinions because God forbid I say something wrong.  And, as it turns out, not only did my loved ones make no attempt at reciprocating--they have publicly embarrassed me beyond anything my wildest stress dreams could conjure and I can only assume they did it because they didn't know how it felt--but I still somehow "embarrassed" them just by existing.  Try to Not embarrass a teenager and yours will be an exercise in futility.
Soooo, I decided to just be myself and they can deal with it.  I also decided to stop sparing their feelings and let them know, in no uncertain terms, when they have publicly humiliated me.  Let's face it, I haven't done anyone any favors by "being nice" in that respect.  If someone hurts you, you need to tell them especially if it's a repeat offense.  Maybe a little awareness and a little empathy after they've gone through it will help us understand and perhaps care for each other better.
In the mean time, Ima keep doin what I do.  I'm going to get these photos in the graveyard in my ghost sweaters with my daughter's help even if they do turn out crooked and slightly blurry.  I'm teaching her more than just photography tips out here and she's giving me a refresher course in patience.
So, if this first month of the new year is any indicator of how the rest of 2021 will be, then perhaps I can look forward to more photo sessions with my girl and maybe even a look back at the end of the year to see how she's improved.  There will definitely be more posts with this sweater on the way, probably not until autumn but you never know.

Subdued Stripes; Boisterous Style

Something you should know about me is that I'm cold.  Pretty much all the time.   And in nearly every season.  When it's 90Fahrenheit/ 32Celsius, I'm finally comfortable...providing there's no breeze.  Unfortunately I spend my life at work and home with significantly warmer people and therefore I've had to make provisions for my own temperature comfort.
At work, I keep a small space heater under my desk which I keep running practically year round.  I also coordinate virtually every outfit with a blazer or cardigan and tights.  I've been wearing Charter School Cardigans pretty much since ModCloth first introduced them, and they have been such a staple in my wardrobe and my comfort that I don't know what I'd do without them.
So, strange as it may seem to call this a summer look when I have an extra layer present, yes, this is a summer outfit complete with peek-a-boo bow front on my sundress and some airy espadrilles, but I will still need a cardi because, well you know, that's just how I am.
This particular Charter School Cardi is called Subdued Stripes and I knew the minute I saw this mustard yellow dress that I would be pairing it with my Subdued Cardi.  I love the way these colors and the stripe print really take a pretty dress and make it an amazing outfit.  You can see why I own at least a dozen of these cardis.
Taking photos on this morning was such a treat, because one of the baby Bleus came with me to do her own outfit photos.  So, I got to take some photos of her as she is growing and finding her style.  I won't post them here, because she hasn't given me permission, but I think she did a fantastic job of putting together some stylish looks and capturing her expressions in these moments of early morning sunlight and being able to share this time with her meant so much to me.
You can see from the glow on everything that the sun is just coming up over the buildings.  This is my favorite time to take photos, but it does mean getting out of bed very early in the morning.  I didn't think baby Bleu would be able to manage it, but she did just find and we managed to catch this golden hour of sunlight.
When I convert this outfit for autumn, and you know that I will, I'll do another post and we'll see exactly how many layers I can manage to add to this outfit.  I'm thinking: slip, tights, and top underneath the dress........TBC
