Write Your Own Story

I grew up in a very small town  It's was the kind of place where everyone knew everyone and there were no strangers, because all these same families had lived there for at least four or five generations.  It was in many ways an idyllic farming community.  But it had its problems.  For example a family could fall that fell into ruin may never get out.  The sins of one person were remembered and applied to their descendants long after the sinner was in their grave and past remembering.
I remember the labels attached to each of us at a very young age.  These were the "wealthy" (Looking back what was considered wealth in that area was laughable) families so their daughters were cheerleaders, prom queens, and the "hottest" girls in school.  These were the poor families so no one looked twice at their daughters.  I remember sitting back one day and wondering when the labels were applied to us all and how valid they were.  The popular girls in my opinion, weren't terribly pretty, some were but most it would generous to say were of average looks.  On the other hand there was one girl from the poorest family who stunningly beautiful and had the sweetest and kindest disposition and yet had never been asked out even once.  So clearly people weren't actually looking at the person, only the label.
It wasn't until the area began opening up and more and more new people began moving in that I saw the dynamics of our school hierarchy begin to shift.  The families in power stayed in power but often found that the new kids weren't interested.  They looked with fresh eyes and no prior labels, and suddenly those girls who had been overlooked were rocketing to the top of the popularity scale.  I wasn't really a part of any of this, merely an observer, but  I for one, reveled in their success.  And for my own part, began to see myself and others differently.  Maybe I wasn't what others said I was.  Maybe it was possible to be exactly who I wanted to be.  Maybe I got to choose which labels to allow and which to reject.
All of this helped to form my decision to move away from my small town, to leave all the labels and the curses of past generations behind.  It was liberating, addictive even.  I remember coming back home for a bit and running into an old friend from school.  I was wearing a vintage Depression era dress and my friend looked me over, then curled her lip and said, "you're wearing a dress!"  I agreed.  She gave an incredulous sputter, "But, you Hate dresses!"  I could feel my eyebrows knit as I replied, "No, I love dresses."  At our school only the popular girls wore dresses; everyone else was thought of as trying to step outside their station and therefore mocked for wearing dresses, sometimes in the form of having their skirt pulled for all to see and laugh.  That's what I hated, not dresses.
So, I moved away and tried to be the kind of person I wanted to be...but it wasn't so easy.  Even though others weren't applying these labels to me, they'd been there for so long, I saw myself slipping into them as an enforced habit.  When an amazing guy asked me out, I often said no because I felt I wasn't worthy, or after a few dates I would end things because I couldn't handle the pressure of feeling that everyone was staring and wondering, "who does she think she is!"
Of course, no on was thinking that; no one even knew me in all the places I lived after I moved away, let alone cast such harsh high school-judgemosque judgements, but it was so well ingrained into my being that it took a lot of years and a lot of work to escape.
Moving back to this small town I've found a few people who never left this town, and that's ok.  The problem comes when people try to force me back into my old labels, or worse, apply them to my children.  I worked hard to be the kind of person I want to be, regardless of where I live or who my family is from 100 years ago to the present day.
That's why I don't understand the current trend of madly rushing to label oneself.  So many people have fought to free us of labels and boxes and ceilings and yet now it seems like people are desperate to define themselves in the most narrow ways possible.
Don't do it.  It's ok to love pixie cuts, circle glasses, and princess dresses.  It's Ok to love a little goblin core, with a dash of cottage core and splash of vintage vibes thrown in the mix.  Don't limit yourself; don't label yourself.  Throw away any of those old labels that just don't fit you or who you want to be.  Instead be all the things and like all the things you want without it meaning anything more than you just like them.  And write your own story; you don't need any help to just be you.

Flex Your Creativity

The woods are full of fairies!

The trees are all alive:

The river overflows with them,

See how they dip and dive.

What funny little fellows!

What dainty little dears!

The dance and leap and prance and peep,

And utter fairy cheers!

Yes, tis the season of the fey folk, the fairies and the leprechauns, and all things of the Emerald Isles, so I thought it would be the perfect time to bring out my fairy dress once more.  Do you know what's it's not the perfect time for?  All the practical effects I'd like to add to this photo, but which would have doubled my time outdoors in the freezing cold air.  No Thanks.  I'll try again when it's over 70F/20C outside.
This dress is such a fairy dream!  All that's missing is my wings.    I wish I fit into it a little better, but I am still working on that.  Everything about it is so gorgeous, I can't wait to see what Lirika Matoshi's imagination will bring us next.  If she does launch any new spring styles, I'll let you know.  I wonder what the next "strawberry dress" will be.  I can't even imagine.
How's your imagination these days?  I've met more than a few people who believe they were born without creativity, but how can that be.  All kids have such vivid imaginations.  How about you. Do you believe that imagination is just kid stuff or do you believe it's a muscle you need to workout to keep going strong?
I think it's both.  Imagination definitely comes more easily to children, but being creative is something you use or lose.  Ok, maybe you don't lose it, but it definitely becomes atrophied.  Creativity isn't just for photos and scrapbooking, it's a survival tool.  It says, I'm in a bind without X but if I use Y and Z I bet I could get by.  Not to sound like an old lady, but creativity could save your life.
Hopefully you'll never be in that kind of a scrape, but at the very least, flexing your creative muscles now and then makes life a little more interesting.  Paint an accent wall, assemble and photograph a still life, try something different with your hair or, dare I suggest, try something new with your style.
And do yourself a favor and don't look to the experts for something creative.  The so-called experts play it way too safe.  Each January I research projected fashion trends and do you know what people are saying for 2021?  Pretty much the same things they say every year.  Let me sum it up for you: Super Boring Stuff.  Big shoulder pads (how many times are they going to try to make those come back!?) Big belt buckles.  Black and white color combos.  I feel like I'm reading a horoscope.  It's all so vague they can't be entirely wrong.  Which of the fashion experts would have predicted that a ruffled pink dress covered in glitter strawberries would be the fashion sensation of 2020?  None of them.  None.
Don't trust the experts to do all the thinking for you.  Use your own imagination to create your own unique style at whatever you do.  The more you do, the better you'll get at it and the more interesting things become.  Well, I think that ties things up neatly for today.  The End.

Better Days

Strawberry Dress Lirika Matoshi
I've been focusing on my troubles a lot lately.  Not just on the blog.  The blog is really just a reflection of what's going on in my head.  Maybe I've had more than my usual share of problems lately or maybe I'm just obsessing.  Whatever the case, I'm ready for it to be over.
When I was little and woke up on the wrong side of the bed, and I was just about to let my bad mood get me in trouble, my mom would take my face in her hands and say, The day doesn't have to go this way.  You can change it before it goes any further.
Did you know that?  Did you know that you can't always change your circumstances, but you can choose how you respond to them.  You can't always choose the outcome, but you can choose your view of it.  You can't run from your problems, but you can get through them and stop letting them control you.

Ok, so some bad things have happened, this year and last and they were for the most part out of my control.  Some of them I was prepared for and it didn't seem to matter.  Some of them caught me totally off guard.  But, I have so many things that are going well right now and so much to be thankful for.  Pretty dresses like this one are just the tip of the blessings iceberg.
So, here's to better days or at least a better outlook.

Aliexpress Hearty Corset Midi Dress

My original plan when I made this banner was to buy this Lirika Matoshi Hearts dress and a dupe to compare.  Upon buying Matoshi's Pink Sky dress however, I realized that the corset top does not fit my body at all.   Yeah, I love this dress, I just wish I could fit into it properly.   So, I decided not to save up for the heart dress and instead just do a quick review of the dupe that's floating around out there.... mostly because I already bought it.

First off, let me say that if you want the gorgeousness of Matoshi's dress this dress just doesn't have it.  Not even close.  It's a cute dress, but gorgeous?  No, it's not gorgeous.  It's cute and inexpensive.  Go into this experience expecting nothing more than that and you.....well, you still may be disappointed.  I can usually find something positive to say about nearly anything, but not so much this time.  Now, let me list all the ways this dress has disappointed me:

1.  No Corset Boning.  No surprise here.  Putting in corset boning takes a lot of time and this dress was made quickly and cheaply.  As a result it is missing that lovely structured look and fit in the bodice.

2. Missing 75% of the Hearts.  Matoshi's dress has glitter hearts and lots of them.  This inspired version does have sequin hearts but far, far fewer of them.  It's not nearly the same effect with so few hearts.
3.  Lacking Fullness.  This dress falls flat in the fullness department.  It lacks the skirt girth of Matoshi's.  This is no doubt a way to save money on fabric.  A fuller skirt requires more material.
4. Slick Ribbons.  Velvet ribbons are ideal and due to the nature of the fabric are not only more lovely but also more likely to stay tied.  Slick ribbons like this dress has come undone and you risk some unwanted boob exposure.
5.  Weird Cups + Bra Exposure.  The cups are just impossible to fit to my body and I cannot be the only one with this issue.  I know that I had similar struggles with this design in Matoshi's Pink Sky dress, but what's going on with this dress is just incomprehensible.  I decided not to hide my bra with photo editing because, it wasn't just a slip here and there.  In order to make the cups fit in the right place I had to wear the straps low and there was no way to cover my bra.  No matter how I tried the dress was either too high or was too low, but at least when it was too low it didn't look so bizarre.

Nothing from Paris' fashion week is going to make it to the mid-west.  By the time it gets here it's a cheaper fabric, a worse fit, and a less avant-garde design.  But I do appreciate it when sellers at least take their own photos instead of using others' photos and claiming that's the product you're getting when they know it's not.
Buyers need to see what they're actually getting.  If they're only using stock photos and not showing people the actual goods it's called a scam.  It's like going to a restaurant and ordering a steak dinner based on menu description and then getting served a can of cat food which I have to open myself.  Seriously sellers, buyers are reasonable; just work with them a little!
I hated this dress enough that after taking these photos I promptly sold it on a resale site.  I asked only what I paid for it and I gave pretty clear descriptions of its issues along with photos of the actual dress and someone decided it was worth it.  I'll leave links for this dress and the Matoshi dress that inspired it below.

Strawberry Love

Lirika Matoshi Strawberry Dress That Blogger Review
Well, well, the season of romance has arrived and I thought it might be time to roll out the Strawberry dress again.  After all, this is the season of strawberries and chocolates and if you can't wear this dress now, when can you?
Lirika Matoshi Strawberry Dress Review Blogger
Ugh, look at all the gorgeousness of this dress!  It's been just over two months since I bought this dress and it still makes my heart skip a beat just to look at it.  Which I do, everyday, because it's hanging on the back of my door in plain sight.
What's Valentine's Day looking like for you this year?  I don't have any particular V-Day plans at the moment, and I suspect nearly everyone is in the same boat with me, but it's still early and I'll find some way to celebrate.
I think you should, you know.  You should celebrate.  Don't let any holiday pass you by without marking the occasion.  It doesn't have to be anything grand, although grand is sometimes called for, keep it simple if you must, but do make these days a time to keep.
And in between times find something worth celebrating.  Finished a  big project, kids got good grades, the dog is house trained?  Celebrate.  Do something special to mark the occasion.  Don't get so caught up in you schedule, that you're too tired to appreciate life and don't get so busy just getting through and getting by that you wake up one day and it's all slipped away.
Pause.  Observe.  Appreciate.  Celebrate.
That's part of what this dress means to me.  Yes, it is extravagant.  Yes, it is frivolous.  It's also beautiful and when I see it, I stop and admire it and smile.
It shakes me out of my tiredness and my routine and immediately makes me want to go out and do something (while wearing this dress, of course).  It reminds me that there's more to life than just the daily grind.
.
So, if you haven't made your Valentine's Day plans yet, do it.  Plan something.  Plan anything.  And whatever you do, savor every single moment of it.
