A Rose for September

I would much rather see someone make an interesting mistake than spend an entire lifetime being tastefully correct.-Iris Apfel, fashion guru.

A rose for September as we bid her farewell.  But, wait, florals and plaid?  Mmhmm, I know it's too much for some, but I think it totally works and I am absolutely in love with this thrifted Bernie Dexter.  I can't believe I didn't notice this dress sooner.  On the topic of fearless fashion, I had the misfortune of being sat with the mean girls the other day.  And in between critiques of everything from people's taste in spouses and cars, I heard a severe critique of a lovely woman who had made a fashion faux pas.

I didn't see it myself, but from the description, it sounded like it a rather bold and creative decision which probably wasn't that bad at all.  Never the less, I agree with Iris Apfel, I'd rather see someone make a bold choice or an interesting mistake than to blandly blend in with all the jeans and t-shirts.  Plus, now I know exactly who I'm sitting with at the next event: The lady who's not afraid to be creative and stand out.

Right On Track

It's been a while since I've done a Spending Update.  In 2024, I decided it was finally time to rein in my spending. You can't change what you don't acknowledge, so my first step was to take a whole year to track every penny and analyze my habits and patterns.   It was eye opening and extremely helpful.  Once I saw my patterns I could set a budget and start sticking to it.

Not to give away my progress report with the title of this post, but I feel like I'm on track with my spending this year.  I've had a few slips of course, because I'm not perfect, but overall, I'm really proud of my progress and determined to keep going and do even better in 2026.  While I will admit there were some really amazing sales or bargains on items I'd been eyeing for months or years and I did end up spending more than I budgeted for, even that seems like progress because it was all stuff I'd been watching and waiting for; I made zero impulse buys for an entire year!  And not once did I sit glued to a screen waiting for the absolute feeding frenzy of a collection drop.

As far as sticking to my budget, the thing that has really made it easier is that I just haven't bought from luxury brands.  I can still thrift regularly and stay well within my spending limits by simply avoiding all my favorite but insanely pricey shops.  This little resolution has slashed my spending in half and not least of which because those are the very shops that do those mad drops.

I've had a lot of challenges this year, some really difficult times and it's been really tough to take it all without shopping as my emotional crutch.  However, I've been working really hard at just feeling the feelings, especially the really tough stuff, and processing it without any crutches.  Do I love that?  Nope, not at all.  Is it good for me?  Well, it sucks in the moment, but in the long run, I know that I will be healthier for going through these things in this way, processing my feelings rather than using something to dull the pain or delay the difficulty.

With only a few months left in 2025, I feel really good about how far I've come this year and am more determined than ever to keep it up in 2026.  We still have a ways to go before the start of the new year though, so I'll definitely be talking about my budgeting year again.

Autumn Work Wear

Ever the avid thrifter, I found this beautiful Anthropologie dress for about $20. This dress is a muted chocolate brown and ivory plaid with an ornate beaded collar.  I added a belt just to break up the print, and since there's this lovely collar, I skipped the necklace this time and went for hoop earrings instead.  I love my Ecosusi bow briefcases for work, and the real thrill in this outfit was these thrifted blue and brown oxford heels that I just adore.  I'll definitely add a cardigan or a blazer with this dress when I wear it to work, but I took these photos in the heat of summer and hadn't really gotten out my autumn wear yet, so you'll have to use your imagination there.

A Spending Diary

As the new year began, I was thinking about and by logical extension talking more about my on-going efforts at becoming more balanced in my spending habits.  If you've been reading the blog for a while, you know that I occasionally talk about wanting to curb my spending.  Over the years I have tried a number of methods to rein in my shopping, and have had success in all spending areas but one--dresses.  In the end, I find that I really do love dresses and it really has been a lifelong dream of mine to have a massive dress collection.  I've also learned that I don't make connections with people easily or often and tend to use my dress collection to fill that void, so starting to form more and better relationships has been a co-goal this year.   The year is slipping by me and I can't say I've had many triumphs socially, but I continue to try.

I know it may seem hard to believe, but I can stay on a strict budget when it comes to anything but dresses. My home has always been quite moderate, my office has always been orderly and clutter free, but when it comes to my collection of dresses...well, it's safe to say it can be overwhelming.  Since most of my efforts to stop spending have had mixed results at best, I thought I would try a different approach by instigating a Tracking year.  Instead of setting a budget, I decided to just spend 2024 writing everything down.  You can't change habits if you don't acknowledge them.

When it comes to health coaching, the most common place to begin is with a food diary.  Coaches often require their clients to write down every bite they eat for two weeks or more and then go over the data together.  Many people with health issues aren't really aware of what they're eating and have this general idea that they "eat healthy."  If they're very conscientious and honest about writing down every bite, they often find not just the culprits (i.e. lots of sugar or caffeine) but also the patterns (i.e. cravings occur at certain times of day or around certain events/stressors).
The first step to really being honest about a problem is to focus up and examine it.  Once these patterns emerge, it's much easier to get a strategy in place to address them.  So just like the food diary, I decided this year once again to keep track of every penny.  Not only am I tracking my spending, I have been tracking the days, times of day, and the feelings surrounding each purchase in order to identify my patterns and come up with strategies for success that help me cope with stress and don't involve spending money.
Wow, has it been eye-opening.  And incredibly helpful.  For years I had a really terrible habit of not looking at how much I was spending.  I didn't want to know because I knew it was too much and if I didn't look at it, I could pretend it wasn't that bad or at least plead ignorance.  But, deep down the guilt was always there because while I didn't have a number to acknowledge, I did know it was too much.  Writing it down really has helped me to be aware of my patterns and keep me accountable.
Again, I haven't stopped spending, because trying to do a No-Buy Year or even a Low-Buy Year when I haven't built a foundation of good habits and self-control in this area would be like deciding to take up jogging by starting with a marathon on day one; in other words it would be a recipe for certain failure.  But being on a Tracking Year felt like a good step in the right direction. As proof of this progress, I just completed a 40 day No-Buy challenge.  That's something I don't think I could have done just a few years ago.  The secret to reaching any goal is to just keep moving toward it.
Now that I have put in the time to build that foundation, a Low-Buy year feels more doable, and a No-Buy year may be on the horizon.  I may not be perfect at it, but as long as I am continuing to improve, I will eventually reach my goals.

Lent End

You may or may not have noticed that new outfit posts have been pretty sparse for the past six weeks.  That is because I participated in Lent this year and gave up shopping/spending for 40 days.  If you ever want to know how much control something has over your life, just give it up for a while and you'll quickly learn.  To be fair, I have known for quite some time that I shop too much, but I have really been working on it for the past 16 months and can tell that I am making progress.  I never would have made it on a no-buy for 40 days last year, so the fact that I completed this challenge gives me a lot of hope moving forward.  Have I shopped since Lent ended?  Yup, sure have.  But I did manage to stop when it was time and that's a victory too.
I haven't been taking photos because I really just committed to wearing the same things on rotation during this time and with all the work we are doing building onto our house, it seemed like a good time to just put the blog on hold for a while.  We're back now though, and a little thrifted Collectif dress seemed like the perfect way to come back.  I really have enjoyed the break from getting up before dawn on my weekends to avoid fighting crowds to try to get a few decent photos.  As an added bonus, the break has given my yard enough time to leaf out and become lovely once more, so I decided to take these photos close to home, which is why you'll also notice an attention hungry tom cat bombing my photos near the end.

Rustic Elegance

I know I've said it many times before but ModCloth started it all.  They were the place to get the most wonderful and unique vintage style clothes.  And then they changed.  Founder Susan Gregg Koger, A.K.A "Mod Susan," sold out to Walmart and ModCloth's soul was dead.  Walmart later sold MC after it had been gutted and strung up, and whomever is in charge now seems to be trying to make a comeback, but I've never been as crazy in love since the Susan-days.  For that reason, it's been years since I've bought anything from ModCloth directly and only purchase vintage MC second hand.  Until now.

An ad came across my instagram feed during Christmastime with an adorable cotton sweater, and it was so pretty and unique I decided to visit the site for a closer look.  While I was browsing I saw this vintage style button-down Rustic Elegance dress as well.  This dress retails for $109, but since I had a very nice holiday discount, I decided to purchase both sweater and dress.
In the beginning, most ModCloth dresses cost $80-$100, standard.  That is a steep price now, but it was even more so in 2012.  And yet, we were all crazy for them because the dresses were generally worth it.  I decided way back then, as someone who had Zero dresses and nothing at all nice to wear, to work it into my budget to buy one per month for a year until I had a nice wardrobe built up.  At that time, ModCloth also sent a 20% promo code with every purchase, so I felt like I was getting a real bargain.   Each month was agonizing as I had to decided which to buy and which to let go perhaps forever as they tended to sell out quickly.

Orignal ModCloth dresses (and those from the brands they carried like Retrolicious, Fervour, and Dear Creatures) were well made,
unique clothes that were usually made by smaller brands in the US and UK, from natural fibers, in flattering styles and before the age of size inclusivity, were already offering a broader range of sizes than most.  They were worth every penny.  My most recent order?  Shipped from China, took three weeks to arrive, and this dress feels like very thin polyester flannel (even though it says it's 100% cotton).  It wrinkles easily and doesn't iron easily or well.  This, my friends, is not a $100 dress, it's $50 at best.  The sweater on the other hand is quite nice and probably worth its hefty price tag.  This dress certainly has its perks but I'm glad I got it on sale.  Under this current management, MC has made great strides but it's not back to its former glory.  Time will tell, I suppose.
