Home Renovations: The Kitchen

Just when you thought the home rennovations posts were over!  Truth be told, we paused on the house stuff for a while because we thought we might just pack up and move.  It hasn't worked out, so we decided to finish what we started and the holiday break seemed like the perfect time to do just that.  So, we spent Christmas Eve putting new flooring in the kitchen and dining room and now both are complete.  I don't have any before photos of my dining room, so we'll do just the afters in a separate post and today we'll look at all the work we've done on the kitchen.  The first time I stepped into this kitchen two things came to mind:  There's so much storage, and Thanks to the skylight, there's so much light!
Neither one of these things ended up being terribly accurate.  Storage is pretty tight when you get enough food in these cabinets to feed four people, not to mention that design was such a poor use of the space that most of it was wasted.  As far as the lighting goes all of the colors are so dark that apart from noonish when the sun is shining directly in, this kitchen is very gloomy.  With these colors, it kind of reminded me of living in a hollowed out log.
I have always loved yellow kitchens and so I painted over the original dark walls with this bright buttery yellow, but due to the blue color of the countertops and the green of the tile, this yellow ended up looking more like stomach bile than butter.  It has made me feel vaguely sick every time I entered this room, but I wanted to give it a fair chance (and I also really didn't want to repaint), so we've kept it this way for years.
I never got used to it, so since the paint is the thing I hated the most, it's the place I started.  Mr. Bleu balked, the memory of painting it was still too fresh, so I promised I would paint it without his help, which I did by working in the afternoons and evenings after work for a few hours at a time over the course of about three weeks.  It was totally worth it because I finally got rid of that horrible limey yellow color!  We also removed the sink from the corner as it wasted space and was difficult to reach.
After that I tore down all that awful green tile and replaced it with white.  The dark blue counter tops were next to go, also replaced with white and with a butcher block sink top that Mr. Bleu made from trees he cut down on our property.  Then the broken microwave came down at long last!  I've hated it for years beause: 1. we don't use a microwave anyway, and 2.  it takes up so much space in such a small kitchen.  We put a new metal tile backsplash behind the stove and a new hood and it looks so much better.
Then Mr. Bleu took out the corner counter top, built one by hand that made it flush with the wall, and put in a wrap around shelving unit and a larger sink (which we got for a song at the local Restore).  We also took the sagging flooring out from under the sink and some of the bottom cabinets.  We put new vinyl flooring down to protect the floor and now have two fully functional spaces since everything doesn't roll toward the sagging center anymore.  Before they were unusable spaces now we have so much extra storage!
All the cabinets were taken down, sanded, painted, wood filigree added for florish, and handles painted as well as shelf paper added and then everything was reinstalled looking so much cleaner and brighter.  Huzzah!
Wow, I am so glad that I took before photos because the result is dramatically different.  I'm glad to have the comparison, because we did a ton of work.  The very last thing of all was putting down new laminate flooring.  Laminate flooring is shockingly expensive, so we shopped around for a couple of months and waited until we found a bargain.  It took two days to install in the kitchen and dining room and was actually a very enjoyable process like working together on a giant puzzel.  I wasn't really on board with the gray wood color at first, but now I think it was the right choice both financially and stylistically.
As far as storage goes, you'll notice in the Before photos that every available space was covered.  I very deliberately did not clean my kitchen in those pics because I wanted to convey just how cluttered and chaotic this space was.  In addition to all this storage space created by the remodel, I also went through all my cabinets of kitchen gadgets and food and got rid of any food that was old or expired (the pigs really loved me for that!) and donated all my unused and unnecessary kitchen tools.    For everything else, I found or created a designated place for it that was not just sitting on a counter top.  The trick will be keeping it that way as my family seems determined not to put things away, but I have made my resolve to live in a tidy home moving forward and I intend to do my very best to stick with it.
This kitchen feels like home now, it feels like me, it feels like us.  I won't say I loved all the hard work that we did to make it happen, but man oh man was it ever worth the effort!

Decluttering--Take 2

After seven years (possibly more) of choosing to hold onto things instead of regularly decluttering, it was certainly a goliath task to undertake, not just of physical effort but mental and emotional as well.  I am definitely one of those people who attaches memories to her clothes.  More so than photos really, my clothes are souvenirs of moments in time, so getting rid of them was incredibly difficult, but I knew that in the end, I would feel better, lighter, if I just let it go.

Seven garbage bags of clothes later, I did feel better, so I sat back for a couple of months and enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment.  But, over time, I began to think of things that could also have gone into the donation bag and eventually I decided to complete another no-spend challenge and adding to that the challenge of getting rid of an additional two trash bags filled with clothing.  While I did complete a declutter of some books and other areas of my home during this time, I'm not terribly sentimental about much besides my clothes, so while it still felt good, it wasn't quite the emotional challenge that the clothing was.  I also don't really hang onto or collect much besides clothing, so this is definitely the area in my life that needed an overhaul the most.

Decluttering is never a one-and-done kind of task.  It should be part of a regular home and lifestyle maintenance, but if you can't afford the time and energy, then once or twice a year should suffice.  I remember it being part of the traditional spring and fall cleaning at our house when I was growing up and something I desperately need to reincorporate into my life.  But, since I was so fresh on the heels of a major declutter, I really didn't think I would have anything else to let go of for a year or so.  After all, I had thoroughly gone through every single piece of clothing I owned and made the decision to keep or part with it.  And yet, the thoughts kept coming to me, "do I reeeally like that?  Maybe I should donate X to someone else so it doesn't just sit there on the shelf."

So, with the decision to begin another spending freeze, I decided to once again go through everything with a fine tooth comb and ask myself the following questions:

  1. Have I worn it in the past year?
  2. Do love it?
  3. Is it serving a purpose?
  4. Would I really miss this if it were gone?
And because I had challenged myself to fill two more huge bags, I tried to be really picky about how I felt about each piece and how well it fit into my life.  There was one blouse in particular that was so darling and even my girls voted to keep it, although they personally weren't interested in wearing it, but the fact is, I hated the fabric.  I hated how it felt and how staticky it always got and that's why I never wore it.  So, it didn't last in the second round of eliminations and has now been  sent to someone who will love it and wear it and doesn't mind the slippery fabric.  As much as I do like the blouse, it felt way better to give it to someone who will really love it.
Over the course of one month, I have in fact filled two more trash bags with clothing to give away.  I briefly tried to sell a few pieces, but in the end, I always get caught up browsing on Posh when I sell, so I decided it would be counterproductive to my no-spend challenge and opted to just donate them instead.  And, guess what.  I feel even better the second time around that I did the first.  It's getting easier, I'm getting more space, and my wardrobe is really turning into just the pieces I truly love

Bridesmaid Dresses with Ever-Pretty

Prom season is right around the corner, but of course, Formal Dresses are something that one may need at any time because there are always things in life to celebrate and it's best to celebrate in style.  I have collaborated with Ever Pretty on a number of wedding dress posts, but today's post is not only for weddings but all the other special days as well, so today we'll be looking at two dresses from Ever-Pretty.
First up is this lovely burgundy chiffon dress.  I was so impressed with the wedding dresses I have tried from Ever Pretty that I was thrilled to be able to showcase some of their bridesmaid dresses as well because they really do have lovely dresses in a great size range at very reasonable prices.
Being a bride's maid is such an honor, but it can also come with an expense that not every bride or member of the bridal party can afford.  Ever Pretty offers a wide selection of dresses in sizes 4 to 26 for under $75 such as this lovely Chiffon Illusion V Neck dress which comes in five colors and was only $63.
Another great feature of Ever-Pretty?  They also offer custom sizing and 15% off your first order and orders over $80 get free shipping!  Sounds too good to be true, right?  But, it's totally true and it gets even better.  With so many great things to offer, you might think they would skimp somewhere, but the quality of these dresses is fantastic and in my experience, the fit has always been spot on.

This Chiffon dress was flowy and lovely and had that sexy slit at the side to show a little leg.  The sleeves are comfortable and flattering, and I love the little faux V neck and fitted waist.
Since it's winter and the snow is barely off the ground, I wanted to showcase a velvet dress as well and this Double V Neck Short Sleeve Dress with the Lotus Hem seemed like the perfect choice for a winter wedding.
This Dark Green color is just right for the season and this stunning dress is only $67.  I know sleeves are a concern for many, and I have noticed that the wrong sleeve can really change the overall silhouette to have an unflattering effect, but these sleeves are ever so flattering, I absolutely love them!
This dress is so soft and with just a little weight to make it warm but not heavy, it really is perfect for a winter wedding.  With a fitted waist and this lotus hemline, this dress is accentuating my curves and hiding my flaws, I think I could confidently stand next to any lovely bride and feel just as lovely.
So, no matter what special occasion comes along in life whether you're part of the wedding party or just need an evening dress for a night out, Ever Pretty has something you'll love.

Bright Colors and City Sidewalks with Voodoo Vixen

All dressed up today in this perfectly coordinated mustard corduroy dress and striped top.  This sweet combo comes from today's collaboration partner, Voodoo Vixen and really I couldn't have paired it better myself!  An outfit this pretty puts me a cheerful mood for some holiday shopping.  I know the holidays are technically over, but there are still lights up everywhere and it really does make my winter a little warmer to see all the decorations.  A part of the holiday cheer has always been walking down the busy streets and seeing the shopfronts decorated with lights and garland and watching all the busy shoppers bundled up and bustling in and out of the stores.
It may be something most people don't notice, but for me this is just as much an important part of this holiday experience and yes, I do dress for it.  Growing up sooooo long ago, I remember that going to the mall was a really big deal any time of year and we were always instructed to put on our nicest clothes "for town."  And we always did because going to town was a really big deal and dressing nicely only added to that excitement, it was that mental cue, that, "Hey! This is something special."
That doesn't necesarily mean you have to wear the traditional red and green combo or even silver and gold to celebrate the winter holiday season.  All it really means, and bear in mind that it can be this way any time of year, is that the only difference between something being special or ordinary is our own observance of it.  Another way to say it is that things are special if we decide to celebrate them and make them special.
So, make it each day joyful and merry, stylish and lovely, as much as you possibly can all throughout the year and if you ever need a little help, the lovely people at Voodoo Vixen can always give you a very stylish helping hand.

Simple Chambray

Chambray is one of my favorite fabrics and one of the most underrated in my humble opinion.  It's a plain weave cotton, similar in appearance to denim and like denim, it's a work fabric, but so much lighter and more comfortable.
Like denim, chambray is a neutral, which means it goes with anything and everything, so when you have a chambray piece as your starter, the possibilities are endless.  So, I thought today we'd deconstruct one of my favorite outfits for fall with this Chambray dress from ModCloth, which I thrifted for under $10.
So, starting with a Chambray dress, the world is wide open; you're only limited by your existing wardrobe and your imagination. Because Chambray is a work fabric, meaning durable, you next need to to decide where are you going and what will you be doing.  This little shirt dress could just as easily go with me to feed the pigs as it does to the office or out to lunch, but for this particular outfit, I'm going in to my chilly office on a fall day, so I started with some burgundy cotton tights and brown T strap heels.
Just a little side note here, that when it comes to clothes that could be worn dressy or casual, fit is way more important that style.  A shirt dress looks so much classier when it fits properly than when it's too baggy or tight enough to cause button puckerage.  So, just as something to keep in mind, be sure to get something that fits well or have it tailored just a bit.  An extra $20 or so to have an item of clothing taken in here and there so thta you can have a dress that looks way more polished, is an excellent investment for both expensive and inexpensive items of clothing.
After the tights, I opted for this purple cardigan from my favorite cardi company, YeMAK.  I know, I know, it's autumn and everyone goes for oranges, yellows, and reds, but really, I love purple at this time of year.  To me, it just enhances and is enhanced by the fall colors, which is why it's become an autumn staple for me.  But, at this point you may be thinking, purple and burgundy?  No, that doesn't go.  Ok, just keep scrolling.
Aha!  Adding the final piece, which is my multi colored scarf that was a beloved Christmas gift from my girls when they were very young, has both purple and burgundy, plus a host of other lovely colors, is what ties it all together.  And, if I had a belt that matched my shoes, I would wear it too, because a belt really is that finishing touch that makes an outfit look less casual and more polished.
And there, my darlings, you have a standout outfit with a dress that can work with you and for you anywhere you choose to go.

Year Round Glamor with Retro-Stage

Collaborating with Retro-Stage always means something glamorous, but this glittery red 1920s geometric dress from Retro-Stage's 1920's collection is definitely at the top of the list!  The perfect style for making a statement on NYE and all year round.
There are dresses in this world that just do all the right things to make you look amazing and this is one of those dresses.  Seriously, looking at myself in this dress, even I had to take a second glance and go, "Wow!  Is that really me?!"
Since I never really know what I'll be doing for NYE until the day arrives, it's become a personal policy of mine to have a few options just in case we decide to go out at the last minute and I have to say that this dress is not only the perfect New Year's dress, but my, oh, my it's perfect for any special occasion.
If you've been reading the blog for any significant amount of time then you already know that not only am I a firm believer in having that perfect special occasion dress on hand for whenever and whatever comes your way, but I also believe in creating the special events instead of passively waiting for them to happen.  This dress is definitely making me want to throw my own NYE bash next year, or better yet, throw a 1920s themed party anytime in between, so I don't have to wait a whole year to wear this dress again.
Let's face it, a dress this gorgeous is just too perfect to sit and wait when I could put together a little something between now and then, and if I do, I'll definitely recommend my guests check out Retro-Stage's 1920s collection.  Soooo many gorgeous dresses at very reasonable prices.
I don't know what this new year will hold, but I am extremely hopeful that there will be more time for friends, family, parties, and making memories in 2024, but no matter what may come, I definitely have the right dress for it thanks to Retro-Stage.

Balancing the Old and New

Phew!  Last year was a real challenge.  This year I am determined to slow things down, work a little less, focus more on getting my house in order and spend time with family.
It's the end of an era as I leave one career field and enter another.  It's scary and exciting and I am looking forward to the new challenges.  But, more than anything, I really just want more of a work/life balance in this new year.
Since I am changing my work field, I have become acutely aware of the fact that everything in my wardrobe that was appropriate or even celebrated for my last job just won't work in my current second job or in my new job.  I've had to make some changes.
Of course, I have done some cleaning out of my wardrobe over the past few months, but my goal has been to not simply refill it but rather to use what is remaining and to shop my own closet to find new ways to wear current things.

I've realized that I have quite a lot of novelty prints and many of them just won't do but I love them too much to let them go, so I've been selective about finding just the right balance.  I've parted with a few and kept a few that I think I can make work.
At times it's been a fun experiment and at times....it's been awkward wearing something that just doesn't quite fit in with the work vibe.  Believe it or not, I really don't dress the way I do to stand out.  I do it to feel good about myself and comfortable where ever I am.
So, today's selection is a little something that I've worn a few time to the office and actually find it to be the perfect blend of the old and new.  It's a balance that I am hoping will carry over into the other aspects of my life.
