The Lonesome Winter Woods

A winter walk in the dried wildflowers is just what I need today, with all the dry crackling things that were so recently green and blooming.  I can't tell which I love more, a winter garden or a springtime garden.
There is something infinitely lovely about the way that these simple wildflowers transform from green topped with white fluff to this rich gray and the small scarlet buds that dry to rusty red and orange that lasts all winter long.
The deer that have spent so many months in tawny brown fur coats step from the woods one day wearing dusty gray, and not just one or two but all of them and all at once they blend into the winter world.
All these things taking place each season in their own time, they are small miracles and little blessings, gifts from the God of little things.
I love the way all these things carry on with their lives in spite of the problems of the human world.  They go on doing what they do and living their lives unchanged by headlines or elections or anything else that causes us to stumble.
I look to these places and the wild things that live in them when the world has made me too weary to want to carry on and they give me hope and strength.
For surely a God who has poured so much attention and detail into the smallest of things has just as much care for people and the most immense problems we could ever create or endure and would never leaves us to face them alone.
And that's why it is here in the silent winter woods where I feel least lonely and most expectant looking ahead to the new year.
