Yesterday just before lunch, a coworker passed by and suggested I go look outside, not out the window, outside. The horizontal snow was not predicted by any of our apps or websites. So, we stood and watched it and contemplated whether we should be concerned or just carry on. In the end, since none of the apps said otherwise, we decided to carry on, but all the stories of "the children's blizzard" swirled like so many snowflakes in the back of my mind, reminding me that sometimes, in spite of all the evidence, it's better to play it safe and just go home.
If you're not familiar with that awful day, there's plenty of information out there, including a newly released book of the same name by author Melanie Benjamin, but prepare yourself for tale of many tragedies. Our day ended in safety and comfort, most thankfully. We came home to a warm fire and a delicious dinner, hot and ready to eat. I thought back to my grumbling that morning about having to prep dinner when I hadn't slept well and was out of sorts and in a rush. I was glad, I'd sucked it up and prepared that dinner anyway because it was all the more appreciated on such a dreary frozen evening after being on my feet all day.
It isn't often that we get this much snow out here. One light dusting or two is the most we've had in the past four years or so living here. So, it's a nice surprise to have several good snows come our way. It's just enough to blanket the mountainside, but not so much that we can't leave home if we need; I call that the perfect amount.
I don't know that I'll have many more lovely snowy days like this one this winter, since it's already been more than the usual. I'm determined to get out in it and photograph this gorgeous dress every chance I get. It helps to have such a nice cozy home to return to after I've frozen my toes and the tip of my nose.
Even though the forecast says this snow shouldn't be here, and now that it is it won't last long, I think I'll just stay home today, curled up with a book by the fire and a nice hot mug of tea with all the people I love. Maybe I'll even do all this while wearing my "snowberries" dress.
