When I look out my window
Many sights to see.
And when I look out my
window,
So many different people
to be
That it's strange, so
strange.
You've got to pick up
every stitch.
Must be the season of the
witch.
~Season of the Witch by Donovan~
If you're not familiar with Donovan, your playlist is lacking. While not exactly "Halloween" music, this is an excellent time year to listen to the haunting melodies of Season of the Witch and Hurdy Gurdy Man. While you're at it, add Norma Tanega's You're Dead to your listen-to's. Suggestive of the season without the cheesiness and all part of a playlist I'm making for a friend. It's still a work in progress, but here's the link. Man, I miss the days of mix-tapes!
Speaking of suggestive of the season, I've been a fan of Halloween themed dresses for years but I've never purchased one. It's such a short season for dresses that tend to carry a hefty price tag and then go on sale for 50% off the next day. I've always told myself I'd buy one on sale and wear it the next year, but when it comes down to it, I'm pretty much over Halloween by November 1st.
Not this year, Nuh-uh. There are some gorgeous prints and styles out there this year and I decided to splurge. Now that I've got a few Halloween-y things, I'll either try to wear them for September thru November each year or else I'll just wear these same pieces each October for the rest of my life. I don't know which yet, but they're cute and I saved a little room in my budget just in case some of the pricier things on my spooktacular wish list go on sale in November.
My first purchase was this Spooky Cute Elizabeth dress by Retrolicious. At the time wrote this post all but XS is sold out at Retroliciousbrand.com. I got mine from ModernMillie which still has several sizes available, but they're selling out quickly so if you want one, don't wait.
My only trepidation is that I don't know what Halloween will look like this year. A lot of the trunk-or-treat and community events are canceled. And, I just saw a news report that recommended that everyone ask Screening Questions of all the children that come looking for candy. So instead of Trick-or-Treat! It's more like, Fever-Cough-Contact?! What a downer.
My family is really spread out here, which is why we don't really trick or treat at their houses anymore. It involves driving 40 minute, trick-or-treat, here's your candy. Drive 20 more minutes, trick-or-treat, here's your candy. Drive 20 more minutes, trick-or-treat, oops, no one's home. Drive 40 more minutes, etc. By the time we've visited half a dozen houses, it's late and I'm tired, which is why I've been relying so heavily on large gatherings for the past few years. Plus, we love a good costume competition.
This is an exception, but my kids won't be under my roof for many more Halloweens, so I don't care what it takes. We're going to do something fun for Halloween. There will be candy and there Will be costumes. And I'll be wearing this dress as much as possible between now and the big day...and maybe even after.
Sometimes things just don't come easily. Sometimes you've just got to get in there and do the hard work to encourage tooth decay and scare the crap out of some kids while wearing a costume you made yourself in the garage.--Wow, saying it out loud like that doesn't really make me sound like the hero here, but you get what I mean. This is going to be a great Halloween no matter what.
