This morning dawned a little meeker and I knew before I stepped outside that already autumn has given way to winter. I wish it weren't here so soon, but that is the way of things and it is December after all. I am almost ready to hibernate and I have duly begun clearing my schedule for the next month or two. I will be spending as much time fireside as possible, but I can't start just yet.
This morning will be a busy morning. The frost is due tonight and there are many last minute preparations to make. I'll have to go out to my garden and harvest the last of the autumn peas and the bounteous green tomatoes which have clung to the vine all autumn in an attempt to ripen.
In fact, I picked two small green romas and sliced them to sauté with with some mushrooms for our breakfast and served them with scrambled eggs fresh from the henhouse and last night's roasted potatoes. A country breakfast isn't just about indulgent portions. A large meal like this is necessary to keep our energy up for the work ahead.
Once we've tended the garden and the makeshift greenhouse we've made from square bales of hay and an old window, I'll need to prepare this food and hope that some of it lasts a while. There will only be enough peas for one meal, so we'll have them with our dinner tonight, but there are enough tomatoes to make a green salsa and that may last us several meals.
We have been blessed with four fluffy white baby rabbits and we'll need to make sure they and their mother are well and cozy before the evening comes. Of course, they have their winter coats to keep them warm, and each other to snuggle up next to, but an extra layer of hay in their nest will help as well. All the other animals have had their winter homes prepped and ready for weeks now and I take comfort in knowing they will be warm and at ease in their own little homes as I will be in mine.
This will be the last lovely morning that we have for some time. Winter is here and I will miss my walks in the woods and fields, that's why I am so pleased to be out in the fields this morning in this lovely Rockabilly Swing dress from one of my favorite collaboration partners, GownTown. I love GownTown dresses because they have that classic vintage style, are so well made, and so reasonably priced. Plus, this dress is so comfortable and the color is just perfect for this would-be winter scene.
The fabric of this Rockabilly Swing dress is so soft and stretchy and I love the fit through the arms; I can move about with no restriction. That's the kind of thing you think about when you're reaching on top of the cabinets to bring down canning jars or bending over to pick the tomatoes that are low to the ground. I'm wearing a petticoat of course, but this full skirt looks just as captivating without one. What I love most about this dress is the front design; it has such a simple elegance to it. There are more dresses from GownTown on the way and you don't want to miss them!
