How many times have you heard someone say, “Wow, we're living in the future!” when they see new tech roll out? There are moments when we all stand amazed at how quickly technology has advanced. But most of the time, fancy gadgets aside, if this is “the future” I am pretty underwhelmed by it. We might have cooler tech, no question about that, but in so many other aspects of life it seems like we're taking some major steps backward.
I think I could do without all the gadgets and gizmos in favor of all that utopic world peace that so many classic sci-fi promised and if I couldn't have that I'd settle for living on other planets. Planets where we could do things a little differently, a little more simply, and dare I hope, a little more kindly? And if not those things, I'd settle for a place where we could just be left alone and not have everyone in all aspects of our business at all times.
It seems like right now there are so many problems and worries weighing us all down. We've got our eyes on the ground, just trying to get through. It's nice to have a reason/ reminder to look up again. When is the last time you went outside at night just to look at the stars and wonder at it all?
Summer nights have always been one of my favorite times of year. Even now, when a good night's sleep is far more important to me than it ever was 30 years ago in my childhood, I still make a little room in my sleep schedule to spend a late night out gazing at the heavens and watching the stars fall.
With all the chaos here on planet Earth, it's nice to stop a moment and marvel at the vast beauty of the universe. To know that I'm not in control and I don't have to try to be. All these problems are such tiny temporary things.
Get your eyes off your problems, your circumstances, your past, and your failings. Leave it behind you. Look up, reach out, press onward. You can be in this world and not be like it.
