Sugar Berry Sweetheart: Sewing Project

“Then you have to remember to be thankful; but in May one simply can't help being thankful . . . that they are alive, if for nothing else. I feel exactly as Eve must have felt in the garden of Eden before the trouble began.”
I had an idea for a dress, something for summer and strawberry picking, so I started searching for the right fabric.  I also wanted to try out a new pattern since I've made the same styles so many times.
I finally found just the right prints, both brown with red and pink.  This one has hearts; the other is a strawberry print.  I did have quite a bit more planned for both these outfits as far as location photos and certain accessories, but those plans have changed.  Never mind my plans.  Plans change; that's part of life and I have learned not to hold too tightly to my plans for tomorrow and instead to be thankful for all I have today.
Regardless of locations and accessories, I did enjoy sewing with this new pattern.  Simplicty 8252 is a 1950s reproduction and the pattern is for this sundress and a light jacket.  I haven't attempted the jacket and probably never will.  It just doesn't appeal to my tastes.
The dress photographed today was my second attempt at making this dress.  For this second time around, I decided to change the skirt to a simple gathered skirt to make it a little fuller than the one in the pattern.  That's my favorite part about making my own clothes--the fact that I can tailor it to my tastes.
The bodice for this dress looked a little daunting, but it was a cinch.  And, since there is no lining  to cut out and sew, this dress only took a couple of afternoons for me to sew start to finish.
With the sweet style and the lightweight cotton fabric and full skirt, I thought this dress would be the perfect afternoon tea dress.  Lately the weather has been so agreeable that I have been able to come out to enjoy my afternoon tea with some dainty cakes and a good book or my journal.  It has been the perfect way to escape and I think I will keep this ritual up as long as the cool spell holds.  I may have to put it away again for a while, but I will definitely pick it up again in the autumn.
