Nature Walk: Flowers

Today I'm featuring another of Karina's beautiful dresses from their new NatureWalk Collection. Such a perfect time of year for these pretty prints. I'm wearing the Cece Dress in Mountain Floral on this perfect summer day and what a summer this has been.

As soon as the schools closed for quarantine, I noticed how much sitting my children and I were doing. It's amazing how doing nothing can be so stressful. I decided to start a daily Nature Walk with them which works out to roughly 4 miles/ 6.4 km round trip, which was no small task after months of winter and then quarantine kept us indoors.

There is an ancient Latin phrase, “solvitur ambulando” which translates as “solve it by walking.” The gist of that phrase is that when you are faced with a problem take a walk and let your mind work it out on the way. What better setting to let your feet wander while your mind untangles whatever mess you're dealing with than a quiet path surrounded by trees and flowers and the sounds of the birds and crickets.

It seems that in our modern world, we spend a lot of time trying to medicate our pain and distract ourselves from our problems rather than solving them. Your methods of distraction and means of medication may take many forms, but the results are all the same: your problems are still there waiting for you at the end and the more you put them off the more they continue to grow and grow. Why not solve them instead?

Immediately when we started taking our daily walks again I saw my daughters moods and energy improved. They were fighting less and worrying less about trying to finish assignments. Not only that, but we laughed and talked just like old times when they were very little girls each holding on to one of my hands. They brought up things that had bothered them for years but they'd tried to ignore instead of talk about. Now we could work through them together.

At first those walks left us feeling utterly shattered—we were so out of shape—but after a couple of weeks by the time we reached our own front door again we felt lighter, unburdened and happier and just generally more connected to each other instead of our problems. You don't have to live in the wilds to go for a nature walk. A simple park path will do and let your mind wander as well as your feet.
