Galaxy Best

Hey, another sci-fi outfit! Buh, whuh! Wait a minute! Isn't that the same print from Rock Steady she's been wearing only in a different color? Why, yes, it is. And thank you for noticing. I might have mentioned a month ago or so that this outfit was on the way.

If I haven't told you before, then you should know here and now that I'm obsessive, a collector of things I adore in all variations and colors. The main reason, I think, is that taking a style and changing the print or the color tends to change the whole look.

Sometimes when you take something that works and you tweak it a little you get something even better. Take Star Trek for example. Such a cool idea, but it had its problems--I'm talkin' Star Trek V: The Final Frontier . They go looking for God for Spock's lame brother--Blech!  But, when you take the good ideas and change a few things here and there and you get Galaxy Quest—hands down the best Star Trek movie ever made.

Galaxy Quest, in case you missed it because you were too young, too old, or just too whatever, came to theaters in 1999. It wasn't a smash hit, but quickly gained a cult following because, well, it was freaking awesome.

I remember watching it on one of the low cost cable movie channels called Starz—we didn't want to pay the big buck for HBO or Skinnemax—but Starz actually had some really great flicks now and then that just didn't do well in the box office.

There's action, humor, romance, friendship, teamwork, and self sacrifice. This movie has it all and delivers it in a family friendly way. Really, I couldn't ask for anything more in a movie, plus, 20 years later it has aged extremely well.

There's an obvious recipe for success in movie storytelling and this movie has it down.  It makes me wonder why more screen writers and film makers can't take the hint.  If we know what the formula is, there isn't really any excuse for there to continue to be trashy, horrible movies, right?  So why are most movies not worth my or your time and energy?

I can't really say what Hollywood's hangups are that they can't consistently make good movies, I can say it makes me appreciate the good ones all the more.  I remember the good ones because they're so rare.  And Galaxy Quest gained a cult following for that very reason--it was good! Although I was unaware of the cult following that Galaxy Quest was gaining, I was actually a part of it. I recommended it to anyone who would listen and I must have watched it a dozen times that year.  That's something I can't say about a single Star Trek movie.

So what does all this have to do with my Atomic Space Print Skirt?  Well, the reason I buy multiples of the same style in different prints or colors is that, much like Galaxy Quest and Star Trek, sometimes all it takes is a different perspective, a new spin on an old favorite to make something totally fresh and original and a new favorite.  So, yes, there are more Atomic Space Prints on the way and you're going to fall in love with this print again and again just like I have.
